Guga S 'thebe Arts and Culture Centre in Langa by Carin Smuts

Architect:
Carin Smuts
Architectural Firm:
CS STUDIO
Year of implementation:
1996-1999
Client/ Organisation:
Langa community, Western Cape
Reason:
Community empowerment

What is the balance of power?
During 1996 the Langa Development Forum asked CS Studio to work on a Cultural Centre to create a space for community and culture upliftment. Firstly, house hold surveys were undertaken to establish the needs of the community, workshops were then held with various local organisations of Langa, this was taken to large public meetings until a project committee was elected, who worked with CS Studio on the project.

In 1996, an overall vision and fundraising document was drawn up and a fundraising initiative was embarked on by Nomthunzi Jacobs, representing the Langa Development Forum, Arts and Culture Environment and Tourism Sub-Committee. Funds were secured for the first phase from the Department of Environment and Cultural Affairs, Western Cape and the Department of Social Services, Western Cape. The Funds were donated and the architects worked with the community, therefore a fairly balanced power distribution was created.

What position do the architects assume? (Initiator/facilitator/service provider)
The architect played a role as the service provider and facilitator of the project, while also involving the community in the project. A major contributing factor of this project was based around the representation of a significant culture there past present and future, therefore the project was based on the thorough analysis and respect of Langa’s entire context (physical, historical, social, political, economic etc.). The Arts and Culture Centre is a platform for Langa’s people to take on new opportunities, get involved in their community and learn new skills whilst cherishing their culture.

In the reading Community: Its Character and Meaning, the author, Ken Dempsy stresses the difficulties that arise when attempting to define this concept of community. It is one of the most contested concepts in the social sciences, yet sociologists persist in using it because the informal relationships we have beyond the household continue to play a significant part in people’s daily lives, and they find the notion of community indispensable to talking about these experiences.…

    1. Prescriber information: The doctor's name, address and phone number should be clearly written (or preprinted) on the top of the prescription form. Some states require the doctor's state license number to be on the form. It is not recommended that you preprint your Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number on the prescription pad. It becomes too easy for drug abusers to lift a few prescription forms for illicit use if that number is easily available. The DEA number is not required on noncontrolled prescriptions; however, many pharmacies may request the DEA number with a prescription to help when filing the patient's medication insurance claims.…

Discourse Communities are defined as “a group of people that share and hold similar beliefs and ideas and communicate amongst each other through unique interactions”. These communities are all around us, from the classes in a university, to all sorts of sports lingo. Growing up I was involved in the Hockey Discourse community. The people in the community with me all shared the passion for hockey, and it was part of everyone’s life. Not only was it just my team, and New Mexico hockey, but all around the world. Sure, every sports fan base is going to say that their favorite sport is the best. But hockey fans have much different qualities than any other fans.…

Throughout the course of African history there has been a significance contribution to the art of the different cultures. After reading and studying about various regions and cultures the similarities and differences all seem to link to a fascinating group of people. Exploring different groups of objects and cultures broadened my knowledge of particular traditions within the African culture. Visiting an actual exhibition contributed to a deeper level of understanding with the visual aids in close reach at the museum. I visited the Brooklyn Museum‘s African art exhibition and was very impressed and pleased with my findings. The group of objects that I focused on were made of the same material, and also derived from Mali. Two of the pieces I am focusing on are from the same culture, and the other is from a different ethnic groups.…

Expression and art are two factors that play a fundamental part in African culture. According to Clarke (2006), many African societies symbolically view body art and ornamentation as a special role in guiding one’s destiny and success, mediating between world of the living as well as the spiritual world, expressing community ideals, defining power and leadership, protecting and healing, and celebrating or commemorating the cycles of life, human and agricultural.…
