Communication: The Key to Marriage Success

The word “marriage”, as defined by Mirriam-Webster is, “the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband and wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law.” As more states begin to legally recognize same-sex marriage, the Bing Dictionary defines marriage as a “legal relationship between spouses; a legally recognized relationship, established by a civil or religious ceremony, between two people who intend to live together as sexual and domestic partners.” Regardless of the type of marriage, communication is the key to any healthy relationship. During the course of class topic discussions, communication in any type of relationship, including married couples and families, is vital.
Communication and trust is essential to a healthy and committed marriage and relationship. A marriage without effective communication is likely to crumble. Communication is a life wire of marriage relationships or any other meaningful relationship (Esere, 2002, 2006). For sure, communication is the key to successful marriage, and without communication, no marriage can survive this divorce-filled world we live in (Jolin, 2007). In this paper, I will explore why people get married, the expectations of marriage, and why the lack of communication causes conflict in marriage.
According to Benokratis (2008), the most intimate relationships are within the family. In a healthy relationship, the ability to express yourself through feelings and thoughts are vital components to communication. In any relationship, you must establish communication goals. These goals require certain ways to interact with each other in a clear nonjudgmental way. This requires learning how to resolve problems without negative activity involving each other. Little is gained if someone else tells you how you should act or feel in different situations.
