According to John Gottman, “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” are behaviors that, if they occur regularly, are very good predictors of either a failed or a terminally unhappy relationship. If you discover that any of these occur often in your relationship, you and your partner are most likely heading for trouble. The “Four Horsemen” are criticism which includes attacking the others personality or character. Second is contempt, is composed of a set of behaviors that communicate disgust. It includes, but is not limited to: sneering, sarcasm, name-calling, eye rolling, mockery and hostile humor. Third defensive, avoid taking responsibility for your own behavior by pointing to something they did earlier to their complaint about you. Lastly stonewalling,…

Sometimes we underestimate the importance of communication. In relationships between two people, they find themselves in a place of comfort and familiarity. This causes one to think that because they are close and they can finish each other sentences and understand each other better then anyone else, life is perfect and there will never be any need to work on how to communicate. This façade can cause conflict and mask that fact that their communication is poor.…

Example: I was sleeping too much and not eating, everything I tried to eat came back up, my spouse knew something was wrong and insisted I go to the hospital, I do not like going to the hospital, so I asked him to "Take a ride, drive around for a while, maybe I'll feel better." However, he took me the long way to the hospital and as soon as they got me in there and were taking me to triage, my heart stopped, again I died. This was a very emotional time for us, I was in a coma for several days, when I woke the only person I saw was my spouse, he never left my…

The right kind of communication such as listening, open ended questions, calm tone of voice, complements, encouragement and “I” statements help bring people together and create good relationships on a meaningful level. If people lack the ability to communicate well, they can limit their ability to connect with others and at the extreme can create conflict. Relationships within the workplace thrive on people being able to communicate effectively what it is that they need and the recipient being able to respond efficiently and competently.…

This is the key to gaining understanding to help solve, or resolve conflict. Listening actively when conflict occurs, will help find a solution faster than if you didn’t listen. Being calm and listening to your partners side and hearing things from his or her point of view, will help you have a better understanding. I express this to my fiancé all the time. He will listen to what I have to say and I will do the same with him. This allows us to come to an agreement more promptly. If we aren’t listening to each other this created more conflict between us. The ability to listen and hear what another person is saying, is needed to work through conflicted situations. “Although we all like to think we’re saying exactly what we mean, that’s not always the case, especially when we’re talking to someone who uses a style very different then our own” (Carter, 2011). During conflict resolution, I use assertive communication. I am an easy going person. I always care about what people have to say, as well as what they think. I always ask for their opinions, before I express my own. I try to be as fair as possible, but make sure I get my opinion across as well. The way you communicate has a big impact on how you get on with people and get the things you want. Good communication skills can help you avoid conflict and solve problems, they’re also important for making friends and having healthy relationships. Being assertive, when communicating, is considered a healthier communication style. It helps you gain self-esteem, earn respect from others, reduces stress, creates more honest relationships, and creates situations that evens out. Being assertive creates less drama, opposed to passive-aggressive…

After reading the article on Close Relationships Sometimes Mask Poor Communication it hit home for me. Me and my fiancé have poor communication skills. We have been together for the past eight years, and we still have a problem commutating. He likes to take over the conversation, or cut me off when we are talking. He said that is because he has short term memory, and that I am long winded, and he has short term memory , and needs to get respond to what I am saying or he will forget if he lets me finish. I on the other hand feel’s like he is talking at me not to me, or he is making me feel like I don’t have a clue on what it going on. Now he says that I read to much into his facials expressions and the tone of his voice. He also thinks that I am trying to flip his words. For me this article was on point also and eye opener. In reading the article it stated that “In fact, spouses sometimes communicate with each other no better than strangers do, a new study suggest“. ( Ashford student library ProQuest U.S. News & World Report. Washington: Jan 2011. p. 1 ). In my own personal option I do think that some couples communicate better with strangers than they do each other.…

Communication plays a big role in how successful a relationship can be. There are plenty of factors that affect the way individuals communicate. The most difficult part about communication in relationships is how the other person corresponds with you. It is all about how you may speak verbally and nonverbally to others. Many people believe gender and their roles can make an impact. Females are the sentimental ones who want to express how they feel and focus on intimacy. Males tend to use these as excuses of why they should be in charge or have power. Their idea of being tough and strong is to not show their emotions. There are specific ways of expressing one’s self, but they must learn the basics of communication first.…

In many cases, it is often shown that in order to avoid issues such as death, people choose to keep their guard up instead of opening up to one another. Death is a topic that is usually kept unspoken of when one is not ready for another to pass. People, families especially, tend to keep quiet or set up a front enabling one from expressing their true feelings on the issue. There is struggle between letting our feelings out, and being able to act as a strong figure is often shown in literature, such as poetry. In her poem, "Legacies," Nikki Giovanni shows how families choose to make the topic of death a "touchy" subject, instead of being open about it, which is shown through her characters, the grandmother and the granddaughter.…
