COMMUNICATION AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS How to establish respectful, professional relationship with children and young people It is essential for a teacher assistant to establish positive relationship with children and young people you can establish respectful professional relationships with children and young people by doing the following: Give children and young people the opportunity to express themselves Give children the opportunity to give their ideas, feelings and let them express themselves by using their own words. For example; give children thinking time and make groups to do activities and ask them what they think about how they performed? Give them full attention when listening
We need to listen to them attentively and respond appropriately to their questions. But sometimes few children seek attention without any appropriate reason, we can ignore what the child is saying but we must not ignore the child, in that situation we can respond them by saying politely “ok I’ll think about it latter” and to divert their attention give them any activity or task. Show you're approachable
In an educational environment you need to behave in such a manner that no one hesitates to talk to you, by doing this those children and young people who are facing difficulties or problems in studies or otherwise, they can come to you without any hesitation. Give them support
Support them in their studies, extracurricular activities and problems they might be facing. By giving support to the children who need it you can make them stand equally to those who don’t need any help. Show commitment
You need to show that your loyalties are with them and they can share anything with you and assure them that it will remain a secret, by doing this you are building a trust factor with them, but if they tell you anything that can create complications you should tell the concerning authorities and explain to the child that it was for his/her own sake. Show respect
Respect their culture, feelings, back ground, and believes, when you respect them they will learn to respect you and other people in their life. Respond politely
Talk to them politely and don’t be rude to them it can affect them negatively. Keep things clear and to the point
For children use simple words so that they can understand what you are saying, keep things simple, clear and to the point.
Set the boundary
It is good to set the grand rules from the beginning and tell them about their boundaries which must not be crossed in any circumstance and tell them about the consequences of breaking rules. Be a role model
In early stages children copy all the things that adults do and get influenced easily by them. A child’s behaviour can tell in which environment he/she is living. So, do those things yourself which is going to affect them positively. Be honest
Being a role model you should be honest to them and don’t make promises you can’t keep. So they can believe you and trust you without any doubt. Get down to their level
Get down to their level to make them understand what you are saying. For example; if you are talking to stage 1 child you have to use simple words to make him understand. Be confident.
You must be confident while interacting with children, young people or adults so they can be comfortable around you and won’t hesitate to talk to you.
Things you must not do:
Don’t be judgmental
Don’t judge any one on the basis of their looks, believes and culture. Give every one equal chance to show their personalities and qualities. Don’t ignore them
You must not ignore them as it can affect them negatively.
