COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY

As a health and social care support worker I must take responsibility for how I communicate with and on behalf of individuals. To this end, I will communicate in an open, accurate and straightforward way. I need to learn and make arrangements to meet the specific communication requirements or preferences of individuals in my care and key people. I am required to gain valid consent before beginning any treatment or care, remembering at all times to ensure that I support an individual’s right to accept or decline any treatment or care, however I must always act in the best interests of the individual helping them to access relevant information and support. I understand that I should consult with and take advice from colleagues and take responsibility to confirm that the outcome of any delegated tasks meets the required standards. It is also my duty in matters that relate to my role to maintain clear and accurate records as required by policy and or procedures and in line with the Data Protection Act I must store records in line with policy and procedures. The multi-disciplinary approach is characterised by each discipline within the team working towards discipline-related goals. Team members work within the boundaries of their professional practice: progress is formally discussed at team meetings, effective communication is cnsidered vital and the client’s role is minimal.

    Miley Ashworth is 15 years old and lives with her mother Janie, her stepfather Ben and her younger sister Melissa who is 12 years old; they live in a 3 bedroom house in a council estate based in Bognor Regis. Mileys relationship with her step-father is limited, she feels that since her mum and Ben have been together that she hasn’t had much time to bond with her mum as she feels that her mother does not have time for her, on top of this she feels that she is singled out as Ben is not her real father but is to Melissa, unfortunately Miley feels like Melissa is favoured as she has both her parents living with her but Miley does not. Ben is Muslim and is from a very religious background, he doesn’t believe in sex before marriage and is therefore disgusted with Miley and is it also putting strain on his marriage with Janie as he feels she should have parented Miley better and taught her about self respect. Ben takes his religion very seriously and feels that Miley is going to bring shame on his family, since finding out about Mileys pregnancy he has been provoking her and pushing her into going to the abortion clinic although this is not what Miley wants.…

    Inter-professional collaborations are invaluable relationships between healthcare professionals that are formed with the sole purpose of providing optimum help for a service user (Hornby and Atkins, 2000). Goodman and Clemow (2010) explain that collaborative practice is actually based around two ideas. They go on to explain that the concept of collaborative practice is based on the idea that excellent patient care relies on the expertise of a number of care providers. Day (2006) points out that actually defining what collaborative working is, is very complex, and that in order to understand what exactly collaborative working means within the context of nursing, an understanding of what collaboration is, is required, along with the ability to apply this understanding to a number of other terms which are often used both interchangeably and synonymously with this one in literature. According to Day, collaboration can be defined as individuals or agencies working together in order to achieve something that neither can achieve alone. This, however, is not to be confused with the meaning of inter-professional working, which is defined as professionals from different disciplines working between and among each other for the mutual benefit of those involved.     Avis, I really enjoyed reading your post. Working as a multidisciplinary team definitely has it benefits, not only for the team that is involved but also for the client. I agree with what you said about the team having more resources available and there are more opportunities for feedback within the team. It is a great way to bounce around different ideas; sometimes we may feel that we have the best treatment plan but someone else may have one that has never been used and should be given a chance. Having the team give feedback helps in deciding if certain parts of the treatment may or may not be affective for the client.     There are various ways to approach and solve problems. Such approaches include multi-disciplinary perspectives and strictly disciplinary perspectives. To effectively solve a problem a person should gather an array of information from a series of different sources. When a person takes this approach towards a certain problem or situation, they are taking a multi-disciplinary approach. As defined in the Webster’s American Dictionary: College Edition, multidisciplinary is the “combining of several specialized branches of learning or fields of expertise” (Multidisciplinary 526).
