Role of Teacher in promoting National Integration, Peace and Sustainable Harmony Introduction:
Communal problems in India have reached an endemic proportion. Each and every part of India is being affected by this problem. More and more people are becoming conscious about their own community. ‘National Integration’ is therefore a priority agenda for Indian politics as well as for voluntary and social organizations. Communal movements are driving their agenda in very systematic and sustainable way. Consequently, some or other parts of India have to face the communal flare up or situation of communal strife everyday. It disturbs the society at large. Today communalism is a serious threat to the nation and is the most challenging task in front of secular movements in India. Sustainable communal harmony is one of the crucial aspects above all. Peace and development goes hand in hand. In the society, unless sustainable harmony is maintained for a longer period of time till then there would be hurdles in the process of development. People should realize and internalize the importance of peace. Unless they experience the peaceful society people will not give a value to it. There are various catalysts that promotes communal disharmony such as mass media, religious and political leaders, police plays. Teacher is one of the catalysts to create communal attitude among children. The education system too plays crucial role in the process of communalizing the society. Today the character of education is brutally abused by communal politics. It develops a rift between the religious communities right from the school age among the children. Every element in the education system is important to form the opinions and perception of the students. Ruchela reflects on the dealing of subjects like history “In the Indian context the interpretation of historical events faces a particular problem in the treatment of history of Hindu- Muslim relations in terms of its significance for the generation of secular attitudes. The communal history founded on the prejudices created first by the British historians and continued by Indians through an uncritical imitation, through motivated writings.” (Ref. Ruchela,1986). Role of the teacher in the lives of the students:
School education is deeply rooted in the minds of the children. Children come to school at an age when they can be mould. Students spend almost 10 years of their significant life span of their life in school age. Therefore the role of the teacher becomes very important. Ruchila explains the role of the teacher as guide and the a person who gives a positive direction about the self and society to the children, “The role of the teacher is to put the child on the right road to his perfection and to encourage the growth by watching, suggestions and helping but not imposing or interfering.” Ruchila also throws light on the role of the teacher for the value orientation through informal discussion on daily events in the lives of the students. It is elaborated as, “ All the occasions of the daily life should be utilize by the teacher to bring his students nearer to the impulses and passions, their battles of loyalties and friendships. There are occasions when the children get vexed and become sulky. All those occasions are useful for value oriented education with patience and perseverance, the teacher herself should be value oriented then only he will be able to give the necessary inspiration, help and guidance to his students.” (Ref. Ruchela, 1986) Mr. Shah raised significant points about inclass and outclass behavior of the teacher and throws light on attitude of the teacher while dealing with children. He says “The teacher constitutes an important reference point for young students not only for their intellectual training but also for the patterns of social behavior they imbibe.
