Common Types of Capacitors:

The compounds or systems that usually consist of two different terminals are used for storing electric power, are commonly referred to as capacitors. They form an essential part of any electronic equipment or circuit because they help in the storage of power. The characteristics of the capacitors, i.e. the voltage it can withstand, material it is made up of etc. are what generally define the ability or the potential of a capacitor. Capacitance is what is generally used for the measurement of the ability of a capacitor to store electrical energy. Higher the capacitance, better it is. Depending on the characteristics, these capacitors can be classified into different types. And some of the most common types of conductors are discussed below.

Ceramic capacitors are some of the most commonly used capacitors, wherein two or more layers of ceramic are used and a metal is inserted within it to store the power. These capacitors were one of the initial capacitors that were formed and usually demonstrate very low values of capacitance. The capacitance values of these capacitors are usually mentioned on the capacitor itself to determine its power and ability in terms of farads.

Film capacitors are also commonly used type of capacitor, which makes use of the insulating plastic film in the form of a dielectric. These conductors are formed by the drawing of the dielectric films into thin layers, which are then wounded into a cylindrical winding. Exhibiting self-heating properties, film capacitors can be modified and transformed into different shapes and sizes.

Dielectric capacitors, as the name suggests consist of two dielectrics wherein the capacitance is varied at regular intervals in order to gain the desired output. These capacitors have the capability of making use of different capacitance so that the element can be used in different device or for different applications.
