Commemorative Speech
I. Introduction
a. Attention Getter: It was an absolutely gorgeous spring day. The sun was out, the birds were chirping and there was a lazy warm wind pushing by. I was spending time with my grandparents as we knew that my grandpa didn’t have much time left. My grandpa who was ridden to a wheelchair wanted to spend what was left of this seemingly picturesque afternoon in the shade of the backyard. It was left to me to move him from his room which was three flights of stairs to the porch swing that was in the back. The task took me what I thought was an eternity and I was quite exhausted from the ordeal but we made it there unscathed. Once I had him comfortably positioned on the swing he looked at me in all seriousness and said; “I can’t hold it any longer you need to take me to the bathroom.” I got up and was going to assist him to his wheelchair but I caught his grin from ear to ear and he said, “Only joking.”
b. State Topic: This is one of the last memories I have before my jokester grandpa who meant so much to my family passed.
c. Main Points: Today I want to celebrate the lasting impact that he had on our family and talk about his love of golf and his faith.
II. Body
a. Point 1: Family
a.i. When my grandpa passed away at 69 he was the father of 5 kids who would do anything for him as well as 17 grandchildren who always looked forward to spending the holidays at his house. Family gatherings were an especially beloved time for him. We were always invited to spend Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter at their house and all of my relatives were always in attendance. Another tradition he started was taking all of the grandchildren to Valentino’s to eat for Valentine’s day. A really, heartfelt memory I will cherish forever is one special Valentine’s Day. Well one year I was sick and my grandpa felt so bad for me that he personally took me out to Valentino’s the next day for lunch so I wouldn’t feel left out.
a.ii. As I said he was the

That was the day that my grandpa passed away. Every single part of that date is engrained in my memory. My parents had driven up to Wisconsin, and my older sister Lauren drove home for college to stay with me. It wasn’t out of the normal for my parents to quickly leave, so I didn’t think much of it. I remember going to hang out with Tatum, my best friend of the time. It was a nice day outside, so of course we were outside playing on the trampoline and doing all our weird routines like we always did. Her family, who was like a second family to me, decided to go out to eat so they brought me along. We went to La Charitas. I remember how Mrs. Teeple pulled out a funny card game for us to play, and I remember Tatum cutting out faces in her tortilla, making us all laugh. When we got back to the house we saw that my sister called, so I said bye to the Teeples and walked one minute down the road to my house. Lauren, who is one of the most emotional in the family, was left with the task of telling me that my grandpa had passed away. I had just grabbed a snack of chocolate cheerios as she started to tell me the news. I didn’t know how to react, so I ran into the basement directly to the furthest corner I could find. Lauren tried talking to me, but I wanted to be by myself. One of the hardest things I have ever done was talking to my dad on the phone after finding out. He called to tell me the plans, that he was coming home to get us, and…

The memorable quote "All gave some...Some gave all" really describes the emotion all of us as Americans should have towards our flag. Memorial Day is a tribute to those who died for our country. We use our flag to honor them by decorating their graves. If that doesn't show the honor that comes along with our flag, nothing…

While the assignment seemed like the biggest catastrophe of my fourth grade career at the time, I would not trade the hours spent listening to my grandfather’s stories for anything in the world. Those few hours alone taught me more about hard work and determination than any class at school ever could. I try every day to remind myself of the sacrifices he made for me to be here and have the opportunity to get an education and pursue my passions.…

2011 was a rough year. It was the full of firsts, but not good firsts. It was the first year without my grandfather; Christmas, birthdays, Easter, concerts, games, everything. In February we found out Uncle Dickey was terminal; the doctors said they’d give him six months to live, max. Then eight months later we sat in my grandmothers garage, talking and playing cards as it is a Stull family tradition, with Uncle Dickey. My cousins who live in Rehoboth even came down that year; I couldn’t remember the last time I had seen them, before that. We all knew it was probably the last time we were all going to be together with Uncle Dickey. When I got bored of watching them play cards- which didn’t take very long, I went inside to watch Thanksgiving Day football. Once I was inside, I was surprised to see Uncle Dickey sitting on the couch by himself watching the Cowboys and the Dolphins pregame. Even though he had an oxygen tank and couldn’t walk without a cane, his mental state had not declined. I asked if…

Today we are celebrating your Bar-Mitzvah, the time that they call the “acceptance of all the mitzvot.” As your older brother, I can tell you that its not the easiest part of growing up, but Dad would want me to say that you must always work your best to realize the importance of being a Jew and too love judaism. In celebrating your Bar Mitzvah this shabbos, and going on in life, you must always remember the core of who you are as a jew and what you represent. As I watch you grow and become a man, I think about who you are already. Your spirit and enthusiasm for life is something that was innate to you since you were born, and you must use that excitement for life forever. The most…

Not realizing that only half of the school day had passed, I sat in the school parking lot for two hours. I had planned on grading essays on a play we’d just read in my english class, but I couldn’t bring myself to do any thing but think of Gene. Finally, Summer, my six year old daughter and Finny, my eight year old son came to the car. Gene had just been admitted to the hospital this morning and the kids didn’t know yet so I explained to them, with as little detail as possible, what was going on and we drove to the…

I always describe my grandpa as the “energizer bunny” because at eight plus years old, he is still the strongest man in the world in my eyes. My grandparents had a cabin in Durango for over twenty years, after agreeing to go there after my dad fell in love with the town on a skiing trip with his buddies. The cabin is hidden in the depths of the mountains, hidden away from the world like a tiny escape only my family knew about. From the time I was in diapers up until the summer before seventh grade, I would travel to their cabin during the summer. Sitting on the porch with my grandpa, I learned so much about life, family, and even how to spit sunflower seeds properly. Although most of my porch memories blend together, there is one that will always stand out to me.…
