Coming To America-Personal Narrative
Coming to America
Three years ago, I came into a world full of dreams, but these dreams can take you down if you don’t pay good attention. I am the first born in my family. Before I came here, I was so afraid to come to a new country, which I didn’t know any thing about. I was somehow confused, and the biggest fear that I had was about adapting to a new culture. After some days of being at home, I was taken to school where I met so many student, teachers, and other nonteaching staff. Although I didn’t know anyone, all the people I met welcomed me, and I really appreciated the welcome. The school counselor called one of the students and told him to show me my classes. Then the boy took me to my new class, and when I entered, all eyes were on

She was our ESL English teacher and immediately noticed that I was a new student and greeted me in nice way. She told me to stand up and introduce myself, which I did. After the lesson, we all went out for break. It was so nice for me because I interacted with so many students from different cultures. I was really glad to know many people and have new friends. For the first few weeks, everyone seemed to have a good English accent, which I didn’t have, but later I was on my way to understanding the new English accent. Most of the students I became friends with helped me, too. After a few weeks, one of my classmates saw me playing soccer; he started telling me about the high school soccer team, and he also told me I could be a good player for the team. I was so happy to hear that my school had a soccer team. I never played for a school team, but I played soccer all my life. Back in Kenya when I was nine years old, a recruiter from France wanted to take me to France to play soccer, but my parents didn’t let me go with him because they didn’t want me to play soccer. Instead, they wanted me to study Islamic education. When summer came, it was so long for me because I was waiting for the tryouts to begin. When finally the tryout started, I was ready to …show more content…
After we finished running, he divided us into our grades. I was a tenth grader, so I went with the tenth grade group. I played with them for a while when one of the coaches told me to go play with the bigger kids. I was so excited! I didn’t know anyone in their group, but I didn’t have to speak English to play with them, so I just played. When we finished our fast day of tryouts, the coach asked me where I was from, and I told him I am from Kenya. He said, “Alright, see you tomorrow.” The next day I came, we ran a lot, andI don’t even remember if we played soccer. When I went home, I was so exhausted that I just went to sleep. The tryout went for a while, and everyone was trying his best to make the school team. The time came for the coaches to choose the team. The ninth grade coach started calling the names of the freshmen that made the freshmen team. Then tenth grade was announced next, and then the junior varsity come I heard my name! I was surprised that I make JV because I thought l would make varsity, but the JV coach told me JV will make me a good player and ready for varsity next year. I was happy to hear that from someone who knows a lot about soccer. I trained everyday so that I

It was a very pleasant evening and I was at soccer practice at the South Barrington turf soccer fields. I loved to play soccer and I took it really seriously. Everything I do I go all out. There was no such thing as a second gear for me, I would always go 110 percent. When I was on the field, I could be looked at as a violent person and I would constantly get carded for rough play. During some of our matches I struck so much fear in my opponents they were afraid to guard me.…

During my freshman year of high school, my soccer experience was permanently reshaped. Our team had lost its goalie. Our team needed to either recruit a new goalie, or find an existing team member to fill that position. Prospects did not look good, so I volunteered to take the goalie spot. Though I had played soccer for many years, this was my first year playing the goalkeeper position. I had no idea what I was getting myself into; I had acted on behalf of the team and our collective need. At first, I was very nervous about playing goalie. This nervousness quickly diminished when I realized that I had a natural talent for playing goalkeeper. I was shocked, relieved, and proud by my innate ability to play my new position. I am so happy that I took the risk, experience playing, because I have played that position ever since, and I truly love it. With my hard work, I am getting better each day, step by step.…

It was my second year back at Kildonan East Colligate. My best friend Sydney and I walked in the small gym doors. My cheeks we’re rosy red because it was starting to get cold outside. As we walked in the gym the bleachers we’re packed with some new faces and some familiar faces. The gym looked small at first because of all the students in it but in reality it is huge! Banners hanging all around from the sports team they have here at Kildonan East. After the teachers we’re finished talking I went upstairs to my Teacher adviser room. As I was walking through the hallways that we’re more crowded than ever because of all the new grade nines. It was a couple days after school had started my eighth grade year and I was standing in the Minneapolis airport with a huge sign that said Welcome Jocelyn. I had spent hours making sure that the sign was perfect: that the letters were all symmetrical and there was just the right amount of glitter and color. You are probably wondering why I spent so much time on a silly sign. But this was the first thing that Jocelyn was going to see when she stepped onto Minnesota soil. Maybe I should back up and explain who Jocelyn is first. Over the summer my family got a call asking if we would host a foreign exchange student for three months. It was a no brainer my family all agreed it would be a great opportunity plus my friend had done it the year before and we instantly became best friends with her foreign exchange student Paloma. My parents thought it would be good for my sister and I to learn about another culture first hand. While I had imagined Jocelyn and I becoming friends: going shopping together, staying up late talking about nothing in particular, tubing up at the cabin, hanging out with my friends, and playing volleyball for the crusaders. That was why I wanted everything to be perfect including the sign. I was so nervous waiting for her I watched the clock slowly tick away until it finally reached 6 oclock the time her plane was supposed to be landing. There were probably twenty other families who all waiting eagerly like me to meet the new person who would become part of their family for the next three months, so when the foreign exchange students came down the escalator there was chaos. At first I couldn’t see Jocelyn then out of the corner of…

I thought of everything that I was going to leave behind, everything that had been familiar to me for thirteen years: Family, Friends, teachers, and mostly my community. I thought to myself: “How am I supposed to let go of all that I hold near and dear to my heart?” The only fear I had was how I would fit in when I didn’t know how to speak any English. There were a lot of obstacles that I had faced during my first semester. I had to challenge myself to be better and improve my language in anyway in English and my focused was how I'm going to success in school.…
