Coming of Age Through Experience and Pain

In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry characters came through difficulties that cause them to be more mature, experienced and brave. After these experiences, the Logan brothers grow spiritually and despite their physical age, they prove to be older.
Throughout the book, T.J. do not appear to be the best friend someone would like to have. His attitudes, especially when he gets Mama fired, lose him Stacey’s and the rest of the Logan’s friendship. However, when he needed help after the incident with the Simmses and the Barnetts, about the pistol they stole, Stacey and Cassie take the responsibility of an adult to make a sensible decision on whether they would help or not someone who betrayed and didn’t give value to their friendship. When T.J. gets to the Logan’s house looking for help and shows a blue-black swelling in his stomach, Cassie’s reaction, “I grimaced and shook my head at the sight. “Lord T.J.!” (Page 244) shows that she worries about him, cares on what happened and even though she doesn’t really like him, she helps. “I had never liked T.J., but he had always been there, a part of me, a part of my life […] ” (Page 276).
Since Cassie was little, her father taught her how reality was cruel, the importance of the land and how she had to be thankful for that. “Look out there, Cassie girl. All that belongs to you. You ain’t never had to live on nobody’s place but your own and as long as I live and the family survives, you’ll never have to. That’s important. You may not understand that now, but one day you will. Then you’ll see.” (Page 7). Cassie was ten years old and she was already conscious about the racial injustice, but she didn’t know how to deal with it yet.
When the Wallaces were threatening T.J., Papa set fire in his own land, which was really important for him and the family, to cause distraction. Despite it was an act of compassion, it was also a sacrifice that made everyone unity them selves to

and Melvin. They laugh at him behind his back, they make fun of him, and don’t respect him. Again, T.J. feels insignificant because he has no power or freedom. For some reason, maybe because they’re white and act nice, or because they (as T.J. says) gives him everything he wants, T.J. feels the need to hang out with them to feel better about himself. It’s common at that age. This is one of the many examples about how Jim Crow makes T.J.’s feelings change his actions into bad ones. When talking to Cassie, Stacey, Little Man, and Christopher, T.J. says, “Got me better friends than y’all! They give me things and treat me like I’m a man and… and they white too” (194) He probably feels bad about them not wanting to be friends with him and makes him feel even more significant which is why he hangs out with R.W. and Melvin. Not only does R.W and Melvin treat him bad and use him for bad purposes, but they also injure him after he steals the gun with them. They are one of the many bad choices T.J. makes because of Jim Crow.…

Even though President Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation to free the slaves, the white people showed their power over the black people through sharecropping, which is known as another form of slavery. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, written by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie Logan, a nine-year old black girl, starts to learn about the racial segregation during the 1930's, in Mississippi, the former slave state. Unlike most of the black families who sharecropped, the Logan’s had their own plot of land. She, Stacey, her brother, and their parents struggled because of the white families. For the Logan’s, the fight against the white people is probably enough, but T.J., Stacey’s friend, builds on top of their troubles. Various characters are affected by the…

Throughout the story; To Kill A Mockingbird there are numerous moments that within the story change characters, nearly all of these events are centered around sensitive subjects such as rape, abuse, murder, death and racism. Although our main protagonist, Scout Finch; has more of these life changing events that any other character throughout the story, although because she is a child and a teenager throughout the story, these life changing moments become ‘coming of age events’. My coming of age of age incident is the most beautiful experience I have ever lived in my life The amazing most precious coming of age incident I had was the precious gift of being a mother I gave birth to a precious, the most beautiful baby on earth my baby girl Evelyn. No matter how much you think ahead, labor and delivery rarely go according to how you plan it to be. Labor wasnt as bad as it many women describe it to be. I heard so many horror stories about giving birth that I got scared when I was at the hospital. I imagined feeling like I would die but contractions were very manageable for me. I had a higher pain tolerance level than I thought. I feel so proud of my self because I didnt even get an epidural I gave birth to my daughter all natural. Of the whole pregnancy and birth of my daughter Evelyn, I enjoyed labor and delivery the most. After my daughter was born I felt a big emotion and sadness that I started crying. All of a sudden I felt so old (lol). I just felt that feeling like if a 100 lbs fell on top of me and I felt different. Right that moment I felt older because Im a mother now. Even though there a lot of single moms or mom out there young like me most of them still go out and leave their babies at home with their parents because they feel like their life is to hard with a baby. Well not me I love my daughter Im a full time mom. Yea my mom takes care of my baby when Im at school but once Im home I dont even go out and if I do I take her with me everywhere I go. Evelyn is my life I feel a lot more mature Im an adult now. My grandma got married at 14 I know how to cook clean do everything so its like a tradition to be young moms. Every time I see my grandma she tells me I was already ready to take that step in my life that shes really proud of the women I am. Life as a mom is not easy but not impossible. When they wheeled my daughter in next to my bed in the recovery room. I spoke to her and she tried to arch…

I was exactly like her, my great aunt Burrell. At least that’s what my mom told me. I remember going over to her apartment and seeing yarn strewn throughout. I love to craft just like her. I would have loved to be just a little bit older, or for her to be a little bit younger, to learn from her. Her apartment always the smell of fresh roses with the slightest hint of smoke from the previous owner. Little did aunt Burrell know her apartment would be her final resting place. My great aunt's death tore me apart. I was never that close with her, I didn’t visit every week. The reason I had my coming of age moment was not only because she died, but because of my mom.…
