Columbus Day: What Columbus And His Follower Did To The Indians
Elijah,

Yes, what Columbus and his follower did to the Indians is definitely unacceptable. I too, did not know the true story behind Columbus until now, which is why I raised this question. I think Columbus Day is celebrated to teach the kids some history. However, in reality, to most people it is just a holiday, a day off from work and school. I think that teachers should emphasized to the students that it is more than just a holiday, but a day where slavery and massive murdering begins.

On the side note, Columbus’s story reminds me of the Grimm’s fairy tales, when we were kids we watched the “happily ever after” stories of prince and princesses. But as we grew older, we learned about the true story of Cinderella, where her sister has to

History has always been a topic that I personally have never thought could be wrong or false; it has always been something that I thought was unquestionable, but Hans Koning opened my eyes to the fact that we should always question history and explore things further. The stories told about Columbus are those of heroism and adventure, but Hans Koning explains in his book Columbus: His Enterprise that our beliefs on who Columbus was as a person are astray. Koning says that the story of Columbus is “Eurocentric” and told to glorify the European civilization of that time period; therefore, the most important argument that Koning makes in his book is that Columbus really was a selfish, and greedy con artist.…

After learning how cruel Columbus was, I don't believe he deserves to have a holiday after him. Why would anyone want a holiday after someone who killed people without a proper reason, or just because they didn't follow through with an order given to them? Columbus told them to do when he in fact was a bad leader. I think the holiday should stay, but have the name changed.…

"In recent years, of course, Columbus' standing as a hero has come under severe assault. He and the culture he represented have been castigated for initiating the modern cultural dominance of Europe and every subsequent world evil: colonialism, slavery, cultural imperialism, environmental damage, and religious bigotry. There is a kernel of truth in these charges, but obviously to equate a single individual for a complex entity like a culture with what are currently being judged to be the negative dimensions of the emergence of an interconnected human world is to great a historical injustice to both individuals and ideas."…

1492: Conquest of Paradise is a movie directed by Ridley Scott and it was released in 1992. The main character Christopher Columbus was played by Gerard Depardieu and the movie was about his attempt to find a way to go to India by sailing west. The movie begins with Columbus teaching his son how the earth is round. Then Columbus thinks about the ways to get to India and that the best way was to go west. The people in Salamanca agreed to seeing his proposal all they do is laugh at it and challenge his idea. Even though the council rejected the idea he goes to Queen Elizabeth I which is played by Sigourney Weaver, and she gave him a chance. This other man wanted to help him but wanted money in return but Columbus did not accept and was to become a monk but the queen did not allow it and the queen supported the trip. They use this pendulum this to help them navigate and to find what degree latitude or longitude they are at. It has been weeks and the men think that they have gone off track and they do not trust in Columbus. They finally reach land and they go and explore until they find the indians. At first the indians are scary and Columbus’s plan does not involve force. They did not really find any gold except the artifacts the Indian’ gave them. The spanish were treated as gods. About 39 men stayed behind to build a fort while they go back to Spain cause the captain called Mendez played by Kevin Dunn, had a fever that would not go away. When they get to Spain they get applauded and and now he wants to go back with 7 ships and 1500 men. So he goes back to the West Indies and all his men are dead and the village they were at was burned down to the core. He wants peace with the Indians and so the Indians help bring in this bell and they help construct this fort and village. Then the Indians were put to find gold and they had to go turn it in everyday and one did not find anything and this man comes and chops his hand off and that starts a war with the natives. So the…

Indubitably, the acts made upon Indians for the sake of progress were atrocious. Brutal and cruel murders of millions of Indian peoples resound to this day. Their populations may never recover from such an incredible loss; the past can be ignored but never erased. However, we as Americans, celebrate Christopher Columbus day with joy. We think only of ‘The Founding of America’ and not by the means of which our country was constructed. To Indians everywhere this holiday is simply a remembrance of the murder, torture, rape, and enslavement of their people that last hundreds of years. So why do we celebrate such an insidious act? Because we justify the imposition of others for the sake of human progress. However is this tactic progressive at all?…

    Why Abolish Columbus Day?

Columbus Day should be abolished because he was not the first explorer to arrive in the Americas. Many explorers before him landed there, but he was the first to conquer the native people and either enslave or kill them. In document 2, Online Petition, it states that the American Indians had already been living there for around 10,000 years. Even if Columbus was the first to arrive in the Americas, he was not the discoverer. To say Columbus is entirely falsely praised would be stubborn and incorrect, because he was the first European to stay and colonize the land. Through this process, he did found America, but at the same time killed nearly three million people, according to document 6, Howard Zinn, whether they be Native Americans or Africans. Document 3, Mysterious History of Columbus, that he alone challenged the unknown sea and as a result, there was a continent that didn’t have kings. This land may not have had kings, but similarly it had slave traders who treated the slaves like animals.…

The purpose of Columbus Day is said to be celebrating the discovery of the Americas. However, there is a large amount of documented proof that proves that Columbus was not the first to discover the Americas, he was merely the first to capitalize on the people and the land. Columbus took advantage of the innocence and the trusting nature of the native peoples of the lands he discovered. “They are so naïve and so free with their possessions…when you ask for something they have, they never say no.” Columbus saw this as a weakness, and therefore saw them as his inferiors. “With fifty men, we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.” Columbus did not discover America, he stumbled upon it by accident, as a country that prides itself on valuing freedom and equality above all else, America should not be…

Christopher Columbus day should not remain a holiday because it is just another event on the calendar to keep track of and it could make some native American tribes aggravated if it stays. Even if Columbus day isn’t as bad as it seems, the people have the right to want to get rid of it. Although some people will get mad if this day leaves, they should know that “Columbus was a cruel slave trader who brought about the mass killing of native people.”. Columbus day was supposed to be a day when America was found, but others go deeper than that and want to get rid of it. All people, Americans and Native Americans get to have a say in this, whether it be to stay or it is to…

Whether directly or indirectly, Columbus caused a mass genocide to the people of Haiti when he voyaged to the west (Source 4). Without any concern for the Native American lifestyle, Columbus plowed through the seas and reduced population of tribe after tribe. Why should America attribute a day of gratitude to this man, who caused genocide in days? However, Columbus is also held accountable for direct and purposeful cruelty and abuse to the Natives of the lands. Columbus wanted the Natives to work for him, and when he was met with resistance, he used force. Columbus released hounds, greyhounds, and more ferocious beasts on the Native Americans in order to force them to do his bidding (Source 4). Natives were torn apart and crippled because of Columbus’s greed and abuse. In addition to forcing people to his will, Columbus had a certain standard for the Native Americans which had to be met. Columbus encouraged his men to rape young Native women, just to instill power and dominance (Source 4). If the Natives were not able to bring in their daily quota of gold dust, “they had their hands cut off… When their cries kept Spaniards awake, they were silenced with wooden slats put over their tongues” (Source 1). Columbus’s abuse eventually led to Natives killing themselves with poison rather than endure Columbus’s torture (Source 1). Christopher Columbus should not be celebrated for his abuse and cruelty directed at the…

My earliest memory of being taught history revolved around Christopher Columbus. I think I’ll always remember the song, Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Teachers and history books attempted to paint Christopher Columbus as a good man who did wonderful things when the reality is that he slaughtered the indigenous people he found there. I’ve never heard from one history teacher the true story concerning him. It seemed women in history rarely if ever got mentioned when I was being taught. If I had to choose one specific experience from chapter 1 to discuss it would be regarding the women of Huron tribe. The men and women of this tribe seem to be ambassadors for the equality movement. I believe if I and other women would’ve been taught…
