Columbus Day: Should we Celebrate it at all?

What do you think of when you hear the name Columbus? Everyone knows Columbus sailed off on the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria. But what did he exactly do when he got off the ships and went onto the new land? People say he set down his flag and explored the land himself, where as others say he went evil on the natives, making them become slaves and made them do as he said. Well, there's a whole other story waiting to be told.

Once Columbus sailed off on his three ships, he set out to sea for about 36 days. Once there Columbus set down his flag, unaware of the people hiding behind the trees and plants of the area, watching his every move. While walking on a path Columbus probably spotted some Native Americans. He was in fact not greedy at all but since they were there and had to know the area, he asked them for a little help. Columbus asked them to find him some gold. After a few times of searching the land and coming back with nothing. Columbus lost a little bit of his temper. He then started to label the men and women of the new land, with buttons and tags. When the Natives were still not coming back, Columbus went to plan B. He told his men to tie up the Native Americans, and torture them. I think since he was torturing them, he thought why not kill them, they had no reason to live anyway. So he started to brutally hurt the men and women to death...

I think we should celebrate Columbus Day. Though he did a lot of bad things during his lifetime, he did have reasons. He lost his temper and then just became over powered with power. Most of us, if we were in his position would have probably done the same thing. Columbus should be celebrated, but should not really be given as much credit as we give him today. The government should change the name to "The Anniversary of the U.S. or something else that describes the discovery of America that was actually stated in a contract. Because, technically the Native Americans did "Discover" the land first, but didn't actually write this in a contract stating they were there first. Columbus on the other hand did have the authority and did find the land legally first.

Columbus should be celebrated. He was very brave to even go out into the ocean at that time. He was courageous and smart. People say he was greedy, thinking of only himself. Well, they're wrong. He wanted to have gold to make himself as well as his country a better place. He brought back things to his origin, that could not have been found anywhere in his area. Corn, tomatoes, peppers, chocolate, vanilla and a whole lot more, Columbus started a very important trade between these two counties. From his land to his new discovered one he brought back horses, cattle, pigs, sheep and more to help out the new settlement of the land.

The people who are not on his side are all too much not thinking about his reasons. They just think if you kill some one you are automatically guilty. That's not what you have to think, once you think about why he did any of the deeds he did, you can tell he didn't have to, yes, but we all have a mistake here or there in our lives, and we have definitely been greedy at one point too. So no one should be talking about how harsh and brutal Columbus was to the Natives, because if we were all in his shoes we would again... probably do the dame exact thing he did. Greed is the most common feeling we humans can't control properly, and that may never change. Columbus was a normal human being and should be the same way we all treat each other. He should be celebrated.
