Columbine High School Shooting

At 11:00 AM, several students at Columbine High School were going through their daily routine. At this time every single student or teacher inside of the building was doing what they would usually do, it was a routine day in the school. No major incident or celebration was occurring inside the building, and every single person inside the building treated the day as any other normal school day. Students would go to classes, go to lunch, have a test or quiz, or hang out with friends. This seemingly routine school day came to an abrupt halt when Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold arrived on the school premises armed with submachine guns and then proceeded to shoot and kill two teachers and twelve students whilst injuring several more students. Violence in media has a very layered and intense background that revolves around deaths of many, but is what led up to where the problem is currently. That being said, the event that occurred on April 20th, 1999 was an extremely horrible and disturbing piece of American history. The event happened as follows, “Columbine High School is a public secondary school...On April 20th, 1999, it became the site of a deadly shooting spree carried out by students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who killed twelve other students and a teacher before turning their guns on themselves. The attack, which also left twenty-four others injured, is considered the worst school shooting ever to occur in the United States.” (Lauren) The loss of life that transpired on that day led many to question what would have driven two teenage boys to murder fourteen people and to then kill themselves afterwards. Due to this fact, the connection between violence and aggression is self-evident, and the continual stream of violence through these forms of media do not help the matter in any regard. This is supported by Nancy C. Cornwell’s statement that “research supports a correlation between media violence and aggression.” Media can send many messages to those who are exposed to it, but this statement suggests that a less than savory ideal may be sent to younger audiences who happen to be exposed to it. As is evidenced by the fact that this influence from a form of media can be found in many cases where someone from a younger audience took the ideals portrayed too far. This is shown to be fact instead of speculation due to copycat crimes that can lead to devastating reenactments of fictionalized drama and horror being implemented in reality. There are many examples that support this statement like this given statement from Cornwell’s article “violence in Media,” “The numerous anecdotal examples of copycat rapes, suicides and violent crime, closely mimicking television drama, movie scenes and provocative song lyrics” (Cornwell).
