1. Define, in your own words:

a. mutation is the gene changing structure by an external cause which at this point can later be inherited. b. point mutation a mutation occurring on one nucleotide in a gene
c. chromosomal aberration is what a missing chromosome is called that or the addition of one.
d. spontaneous mutation a spontaneous act of mutation on a DNA structure.
e. radiation-induced mutation mutation caused by radioactive exposure.
f. chemical-induced mutation a chemically caused mutation.
2. Can a radiation- induced mutation turn someone into the Incredible Hulk? Why or why not?
No, that is an exaggeration to what is possible. There can be abnormalities or mutations caused by radiation but most of them end in cancerous outcomes.
3. Which of the causes of mutations can we avoid? Why or why not?
We can avoid chemical mutations by being aware of what we ingest or use as medical treatments. 4. Which of the causes of mutations can we not avoid? Why or why not?
Naturally we can have mutations occur due to many things mainly we need to avoid chemical and radiation cause mutations.
5. Research about the current state of the animal and plant life on the land at and around the
Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukraine or the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.
Answer the following questions:
a. What is the approximate size of the evacuation area? This area is about 30Km and is called the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Pant Exclusion Zone

b. Are the levels of radioactivity found in animals, plants and in the land dangerous? Are scientists concerned about these levels? Is there agreement among the scientists?
Yes, we are still not allowed within this zone although plant an animal life is being effected by the radiation there is also population growth due to no human contact. c. What does the future hold for the nuclear power plant and surrounding area?
A very slow SLOW SLOW decline in radiation that still will leave a mark on the people, animals and land.
d. Would

The potential for evolution begins when a mutation occurs during the reproductive process of a given organism. In most cases, that mutation will have a harmful effect or no effect at all, but sometimes, a random mutation will give it’s carrier an advantage, giving it a better chance to survive, and reproduce. That’s when natural selection comes in; the mutation will spread throughout the population and be passed down through generations and generations. Continued on Next…

Genetic mutation is defined by Wordnetweb.princeton (2010) as being ‘Any alteration in the inherited nucleic acid sequence of the genotype of an organism’. This mutation can occur for a variety of reasons; exposure to radiation, environmental factors (including ultra-violet light) or genetic construction…

When a person is born, their DNA is subject to many different mutations throughout their life. Some of which are inherited from their parents, they develop at birth or during their adulthood. Some of these mutations are harmless and can go unnoticed for your whole existence, while others can alter your health drastically. There are some mutations that are considered to be valuable, as well as a silent one which does not affect you at all. The mutations heard about most often are those that cause disease such as, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, and Tay-Sachs disease (Genetics.) These specific diseases are both devastating and life changing. Each disease is caused by a mutation in different gene and in turn affects different parts…

A mutation can cause evolution of a population. When a parent with genes that is red in coloration to have offspring with a gene for black coloration, it more frequent in the population before the mutation. (I am going to use a fly for examples) In migration flies from a black population joins the red and makes the black color more frequent in the red fly population, before the black fly migration. A Genetic draft when flies are killed and has no offspring which making the next generation less. Genetic makeup cannot change unless there is a genetic variation in the population.…

After the Chernobyl disaster of April 26th, 1986, it was often said that the nuclear industry no longer had the resilience to survive another major nuclear accident. The industry hoped that the sentiment behind the Chernobyl accident could be eased on the basis that it was the consequence of a flaw in design that was unique to the Soviet Union’s reactors and that they had been operated in such a way that would not have been acceptable in the West. Then, Fukushima changed everything. That, at least, was the popular view adopted in the aftermath of March 11, 2011, by the press, media and across the Internet blogging community. A nuclear accident in such a densely populated and well-developed country would transform the way nuclear energy is perceived, as well as, determine the way it would be used, or not used, in the years to come. This analysis attempts to overview its causes, evaluate its impact, and understand its consequences on future nuclear development.…

According to the Genetics Home Reference (2014), a gene mutation is a permanent change in the DNA sequence within a given gene (Par. 1). These mutations can vary greatly as they range in size. There are two main ways in which these mutations can occur. They are referred to as inherited mutations and point mutations. An inherited mutation is a gene mutation which is passed through family or generations (Par. 6). For example, a parent and child may both exhibit signs of an inherited gene mutation. A point mutation, however, is a gene mutation which is the replacement of a single base nucleotide with another nucleotide. This type of mutation does not need to be passed down through family.…

    Are all mutations harmful

There are two main classes of genetic mutations. Firstly there are point mutations which are where there is a change in only one base pair this could either because it has been deleted or replaced by a different pair. On most occasions this is known to be a silent mutation because it has no effect as the same protein is made. This is possible because the codons are detrimental meaning that there is more than one codon to code for a single amino acid, so GTA is replaced by GTG it will still code for valine. On the other hand such a small mistake can cause horrible diseases. This tiny mistake can have devastating affects to the organism. Another example is sickle-cell anaemia which happens because of a point mutation at codon 6 for the gene for beta-polypeptide chains of haemoglobin. This causes the amino acid valine to be inserted instead of a glutamic acid.…

Mutations can lead to genetic variations by producing random changes in an organism’s genetic coding. This causes a different protein to be produced, or none at all. Mutation usually has a negative effect due to an important protein and enzyme not being produced, so the organism cannot preform its original function.…
