In seventh grade, my brother joined the middle school band. This was the start of a new beginning for me. My perspective of others started to broaden slightly by being exposed to some band members who were my brother’s friends. Three years later, when I entered seventh grade, I decided to join the middle school band and play the trumpet. I finally was a part of the group that I had been mocking for years. This was a large step for me. I was about to embark on a tremendous journey that would completely change my perspective on life. I would start to realize, as I became closer to the other members, that band students are not all the geeks that they are made out to be. While some members are a little quirky and some of the things that I did in band were a little weird, I truly discovered all of the great things that band has to offer. As I soon came to realize, members of marching bands gain valuable character traits, leadership skills, and academic benefits that help them excel in…

In the past, I have demonstrated leadership as both the assistant manager of a frozen yogurt shop and as a leader in the University Honors Program as a member of the Honors Student Council. I have also exhibited leadership throughout my academic and sports career by acting as a role model for my peers and leading by example. As a leader, I know that I do not need to be the most vocal, and instead understand that I should set the standard for my peers to follow. My past leadership…
Not only do I try to accomplish these events in the band, but I am also a leader of the school. This year is my ninth year of being a cheerleader and it has taught me a lot about respect. I understand that people do not consider cheerleading a sport, but they do not take into their consideration the hard work we put into everything we do. This also relates to the band because it is not known as a competitive sport, but we work just as hard in our job and perfecting performances, just as much as any athlete. Nine years of the same activity takes lots of endurance and dedication into a certain passion, and I have learned over the years to have this.…
Teamwork in school increases of work by reducing the risk of individual errors and help those, who have difficulty in performing tasks, to build our confidence. This is the opportunity to exchange experiences and listen to the different ideas to use them.…
One of my most defining experiences to date has been my involvement with the colorguard squad at my school. The colorguard squad is an auxiliary unit that is part of the marching band. We perform with the band at Friday night football games during halftime while spinning flags and rifles to the music. To me, colorguard is so much more than that. Freshman year when I went to tryouts I was terrified. I did not have any friends trying out with me; I was walking into a gym full of older girls whom I had never met. To my surprise, being on the squad for the past three years has been such a defining achievement during high school for me. Without the squad I would have had a completely different experience in school. I learned the value of hard work…
“Students rose to the challenge of marching at various paces while performing three different tunes and a drum cadence. The color guard lead the band with their challenging, original routines written by the students themselves. I…
In high school, I was involved multiple clubs and groups varying from athletic, academic, and artistic. Overall, the school’s marching band color guard had the largest influence on my personal growth in during the time. At my school, all color guard members are required to complete one season of marching and playing instruments with the band before being allowed to join the guard. Therefore, it wasn’t until my sophomore year that I auditioned and was accepted into the color guard which I participated in for the rest of my high school career. Because there was no recognized team captain, all the girls were expected to step up as leaders not only for themselves but for everyone else as well.…
I have involved myself in a multitude of different organizations throughout middle and high school. With everything from experience in scouting, to coaching, to work with Habitat for Humanity, the importance of leadership skills has become evident to me. They have given me experience that has made me more successful in school currently, and I intend for them to help me in my educational endeavors at East Carolina University as well. The experience I will receive in the…
Many people have heard the saying, there is no I in team. Like any sport, a band can not function through one person alone. While marching, if I did not work together with the other members of the band, it would be a disaster. Marchers would be running into one another, and the music would not line up together. It took everyone working together as one to create a masterpiece.…
The Butler County Performing and Visual Arts programs our community offers has truly changed the person I am today. Through the Butler County High School Band, I have learned how to play the flute and been doing so for eight years and been able to perform in the marching band as a color guard member for four years. It truly has been such a blessing to be in such an amazing program, and I am extremely thankful for the opportunities and friendships it has given me. I began playing the flute in 5th grade at Morgantown Elementary School. Never would I imagine the memories and friendships I have gained from picking up that flute when I was 10 years old.…

This year, my first year in Color Guard and Marching Band, I’ve learned discipline and what it means to be a part of something bigger than me. Working with the other girls on guard, we work as a team to learn our routines and how to stay in sync with our flags which takes a lot of hard work and repetition. During our long, strenuous rehearsals, it is important to stay focused and pay attention to directions. By setting an example for the younger members, I hope to show them what it takes to be successful in what we do, because it cannot be done without a huge amount of commitment and pride to represent West and our Marching Band program.…
There are many reasons why I want to become an Auror leader, my number one reason is because I frankly feel that my experience in Ursa changed me as a person and I want to continue the personal growth that Aurora has started while helping new students experience the same growth that I did. I have always been dedicated to helping those who are younger than myself. In high school I was on the track team and one of my favorite things to do was to mentor the first year athletes. By doing this I would show my younger teammates correct technique, and how to prepare for meets physically as well as mentally. Now that I am in college I love to help kids from my highschool who are interested in Penn State. I show them around campus, and I gave them…
Through my assistant job at the library I have learned to work with a staff to plan events for kids during the summer. I learned that planning is not easy and there are many administrative hoops that you have to jump through in order to plan a successful event. I have been teaching roller skating to kids in the community for about four years now and this experience has taught me to work with people all ages and has given me a chance to develop leadership skills. I have learned to be an empathetic leader, by helping them learn and grow from their mistakes and providing emotional support. Spearheading this class was no walk in the park. This experience put my leadership abilities, patience, and positivity to the test; however, I am proud to say that I have taught over four hundred students how to roller skate proficiently over these past 4 years. Being a roller skating instructor has really shaped my qualities and values I have now. These leadership qualities and skills I have gained from my experience of being a roller skating instructor are transferrable to my ability to be a good RA. I know that this job will help me continue to improve my leadership skills and allow me to learn from my residents, co-workers and supervisors. At last, being a crew leader has given me the chance to be a mentor and a leader, guiding the freshmen to discover what it takes to be…
