Animals of Colorado

Bighorn Sheep- Bighorn sheep are animals native to North America and get their names for the big horns they have, which are usually about 30 lbs. The sheep in all is 300 lbs.

Cougar- The cougar is a large cat that usually lives in North and South America. It is also known as as the puma, mountain lion, and panther. Their diet mostly consists of any animal it can catch.

Pronghorn- More commonly known as the antelope, the male pronghorn ranges from
1.3-1.5 meters tall. It is the second fastest mammal in the world, top speed measuring up to 53 mph. Prong horns are also very good distance runners that can travel for miles at a time at about half their top speed.

Juan de Oñate founded what would become the Spanish province of Santa Fé de Nuevo Méjico on July 11, 1598.In 1787 Juan Bautista de Anza established the settlement of San Carlos near present-day Pueblo, Colorado, but it failed fairly quickly. This was the only attempt of the Spanish to try to create a settlement beyond the Arkansas River.

In 1803 the United States acquired a territorial claim east of the Rocky Mountains by the Louisiana Purchase from France. However, the claim conflicted with Spain's claim to sovereignty over the territory. Zebulon Pike led a U.S Army into the disputed region in 1806 but Pike and his men were arrested in San Luis Valley, Zebulon Pike taken to Chihuahua then expelled from Mexico.
Then in 1846 the U.S went to war with Mexico and won. The defeated nation then retreated back to its northern territories by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848.

    The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is an agreement, signed on February 2, 1848, at Guadalupe Hidalgo, which is a city north from the capital of Mexico, between the United States and Mexico that marked the end of the Mexican War.
