After realizing that Colin is dead, Carol eyes open in disbelief and a shriek discomforts viewers. Both silence and sound, like in this scene, is used throughout the film to create tension and emphasize terror. During the beginning of the film, music is lively and upbeat. At the salon, nondiegetic sounds of a flute and jazz paint a peaceful scenery. As Carol walks home, viewers hear traffic sounds and live band music. During the day birds are chirping, airplanes fly overhead, and the elevator door is heard frequently. At night, sounds which were once peaceful turn unpleasant. The church bell that strikes at midnight awakens Carol from her sleep, it becomes louder and louder as if taunting her when suddenly everything goes silent. The silence encourages viewers to listen closely. Helen’s moans and breaths are softly hear across the room but like the church bells, they intensify and mock…

The theme is, never underestimate the power of nature. I know this is the theme because the destruction of Hilo town by nature was mentioned many times. In the novel Blue Skin of the Sea, in chapter six entitled, “You would cry to see Waiakea Town,” Raymond (Dad) told Sonny “‘Never underestimate it’s power, Dad had told me. It could wake, yawn, and swallow you between one heartbeat and the next.’” This quote explains how fast the ocean could turn from sending calm waves, to sending wild and dangerous waves. This relates to the theme because the ocean is apart of nature and the ocean is powerful, when it brings a tsunami, it bring great danger. Another reason why this is the theme of chapter six is because when Aunty Pearl was listening to the…

In The Color of Water by James McBride, we are taught through the eyes of a black man and his white mother that color shouldn’t matter. Although Ruth McBride Jordan had grown up as a Jew and had a father who disliked Jews very much, she was never prejudice against them and learned that she fit into the black world better than the white world. When she married a black man, she accepted Christ into her life and told her children, “God is the color of water.” She taught her kids that color didn’t matter, because God loves all races.…

Diaz states that he can “no longer obligated to transmit/ the crack of thawing ice that fills the yard’s / wide dip in winter, or the scrape of his/ dull rake in spring” (Diaz lines 15-18). Diaz proclaims that her father no longer has to hear the sound of ice in the winter or the scrape of his rake as he is working on the yard. Diaz states that this is good because he does not have to hear the sounds of everyday life. She proclaims that he is lucky for not having to hear these sounds. Diaz asserts that her father can “see his quiet/ flicker like a film, a Super-8/ projected on the wall/ and all of us/ there, laughing on the porch without a sound” (Diaz lines 22-25). Diaz declares that her father can only interpret what they are saying and not actually hear what they are saying. She sees this as an advantage because he is able to be by himself at all times. It is almost as if she would love to only be with her thoughts and not have to hear the sounds of everyday life. Diaz states that he gets his own silent film, however; Diaz does not think about how her father must be feeling. Her father has to sit there and watch his kids laugh and not be able to hear their laugh. Diaz also states that her father can no longer hear “noisome cruelty, baffled rage, / [or] aging children sullen in their lack” and states that “love hurts much less in this serenity” (Diaz lines 26-28). Diaz…
