Colonialism in Flyin' West Pearl Cleage
Teatro Norteamericano GROUP B-3

Flying West is a play set in the town of Nicodemus, Kansas in 1898, and this play tells the story of black women (Miss Leah, Sophie, Fannie and Minnie) who have come west to build a new life for themselves, free from the racism and oppression of the South. Problems begin when Minnie returns from Europe where she has been living with her husband, Frank. Frank is waiting for an inheritance which will never receive. He mistreats Minnie and Miss Leah wants to protect Minnie so Miss Leah prepares a special pie for killing Frank.

In my opinion one of the most important topics in this text is the way Pearl Cleage deal with the influence of colonialism in one of the main characters: Frank. Frank is the son of a white slave-owner and a very light-skinned black, he is a mulatto, and in fact his mother was a Black slave who gets married with his father. These facts are decisive for the way Frank behaves in the play.

First of all Frank rejects his roots and he is ashamed of being a mulatto, he considers himself as an English person, and what is more he thinks England is the best country in the world: “FRANK: I had been away from England for almost a month and I hadn’t heard a note of Puccini in all that time”(40). Frank criticizes the way Sophie combs her hair, because Sophie combs her hair in the way black women combs it: a braid. “FRANK (Angrily): I want you to put your hair back the way it was.” In this way we can see how Frank is influenced by his father’s ideology and by the image of black society that colonialism gives us in that period. Secondly he insults her wife: Sophie, for being a black woman. “FRANK […] you’re too black to bring me any good luck” (55) and he insults other women like Minnie for example.

On the other hand Frank shows some behaviors that white men of that period shows for example capitalism , he only thinks in money and in sell Minnie’s land. “FRANK: Do you know how much that land is worth?”(64)

Probably the most important convention was the theme of the play. While the play made light of the topic of racism through its use of comedy, it is still important none the less. The theme is what carried the play along because even in today’s society it is still an issue that still prevails throughout the country and all over the world.…

The Scarlet Letter talks about a story of a woman called Hester wears an “A” which means “Adultery” in a strict society, through whole story, we can see how this “A” affect not only her but also the people around her. Pearl as Hester’s daughter, the youngest main role in the Scarlet Letter, author Nathaniel Hawthorne uses her to show us the most comprehensive analysis about different characters in this book. Because of how innocent and pure Pearl is, we also can see reactions of the society and people at that time as well as a little girl who grows up in a special environment how she deals with those treatments.…

Franklin aimed to cover the Caribbean and South Africa, which is known for being the two primary places of the slave trade. But around the fourth page of the text given Franklin’s tone starts to shift toward real accounts of ways that blacks were being mistreated in America, a particular line that sticks out in my mind is when Franklin writes, “I have seen them measure out medicine or educate a sick or ignorant white child and ignore a black child with similarly situated”. In reading that my mind is taken to just reflect on how cruel of a period it was for blacks, and not only did it have its affect on the adults but the children were also being victim to the unjust behavior also. It also makes wonder how in that struggle for freedom and later on during the civil rights movements so many blacks were able to keep a peaceful state of mind. Though having the understanding at many blacks had non-peaceful approaches, in which violence was used; I just think how it could have been so much worse especially in the minds of children, the amount of prejudice they encounter and how that can make someone’s heart hardened with…

She calls upon the of a number of maids who works for her friends; Aibileen, Minny and Pascagoula in order to make her book a real like interpretation of the struggles they face on a daily bases. Jackson has a community that seems to be very racist and oblivious and close minded towards change and fait treatment towards citizens that reside there. The community seemingly split in two divided over an adequate racial line that has been passed down from generations to generations. Stern guidelines and regulations are put in place in order to separate the blacks and white. The writer gives us a glimpse of the Mississippian world back in the day and how maids were treated and the amount of racism and hatred that occurred in Jackson Mississippi. White Mississippians had been brought up and through social conditioning they had a mentality that prevented them to change their views and allow blacks to live the same luxury they had. Whites had more freedom blacks had, they allowed their communities to grow and flourish whereas blacks’ community became congested and overcrowded due to the restrictions preventing their community to grow “Jackson is just one white neighbourhood after the next” and “the coloured part of town be one big…
