Colonel Dax As A Leader In The Movie 'Paths Of Glory'

Since I did not come across any self-sacrificing leaders in my experience, from our class movies I can think of Colonel Dax from the movie Paths of Glory as the most suitable character that fits perfect for the self-sacrificing behavior. In the movie General Mireau orders Colonel; Dax to take on a suicidal mission capturing Anthill. Colonel Dax knows that many soldiers’ lives are at risk in this operation, So he expresses his concerns .Mireau is a self-benefiting leader who is greedy for getting a promotion, he tries to manipulate Colonel Dax by saying that it is their duty for the country. When that is not working he uses coercive power by threatening him his command will be given to someone else. Colonel Dax knows that if someone else will take his position they may not care for the lives of the soldiers in the mission. So, he
In the movie we see that General Mireau fakes as though he is a very considerate person by asking the soldiers questions about their whereabouts, but we did not see Dax doing that the soldiers to maintain personal relationships when the moment came when he knew that three of the soldiers were falsely accused of crime in war when they were trapped in trench and unable to move. Being a lawyer himself he decided to fight for the soldiers. As he believed that his leaders did a wrong thing firing at them. He is not afraid of the consequences going against his General. With his cations Dax gained the trust of the soldiers that he is a true leader who is there for them. Especially in battlefield in addition to status quo trust is a very strong factor binding the soldiers. Though he tried his best to defend the soldiers and condemns Mireau for firing on his soldiers, he could not save the three soldiers form death penalty but Dax did gain the trust of the rest of the soldiers.
