Based on our textbook, stressors fall into three main types: catastrophes, significant life changes, and daily hassles. Thirty seven college students at DePaul University’s Lincoln Park campus were surveyed in reason to find whether a college student that works during the academic year becomes stressed out compared to a college student who doesn’t hold a job. The surveys collected were entered in SPSS to determine my results. I found that students who experienced some form of anxiety had no effect to their grade point average. I could not find any significant difference between college students with jobs compared to those with out jobs in regards to their grade point average.…

Alcohol is the easiest coping mechanism to students because we are exposed to alcohol more than anything else. Throughout high school, most students are shown “the ways” of drinking. Lots of students find out the positive outcomes of drinking; relaxation, relief of stress, temporarily happiness, but they tend to avoid the negative outcomes; laziness, forgetfulness, and physical damage to the body. Everyone has personal stressors that drive them to drinking. Freshmen have very similar and critical stressors though. Home sickness, studies, lack or loss of relationships are things that students deal with every day. With every stressor, there is a way to cope with it, without resorting to alcohol. For example, when students miss home they should try to make their new place just as comfortable and they should never be shy to call their parents. To deal with lost friends from moving on to university, make new friends! You can still keep in touch with past friends, but making new friends while at university is an essential part of feeling happy and relieving stress while at school. In addition, joining a club or sports team helps to make new friends and is useful as a stress reliever. For example, I joined a volleyball team, and this is a good time to get out of my place to go have some fun, and forget about school for a bit, this usually results in me avoiding drinking. To regards with studying, take breaks, treat yourself and remember trying hard is all you can do, so never be disappointed if you put forth an honest effort. There are several ways to avoid stress. First, we have the stress caused by adapting to a new life. College students have a heavier workload compared to their high school life. It is also in this phase that we experience the letting loose of teachers and parents to college students that will result to their being more independent. In there, we also experience the challenge to cope up with the new standards in our academics. Second one is the stress caused by peer pressure. We meet a new set of people once we enter college. We create a new social network in this part of our life. In connection with this, students do their best to keep up to the trend of their new network. We also have problems in balancing our time going out with friends with our academics. Third one is the stress causes by relationships. As said, it is in college that we meet our new networks wherein relationships are built. Stress enters when we start having problems and misunderstandings with your partner. We also encounter the problem of time management here wherein we spend more time with our partner than our studies. Another is being heartbroken that leads to lack focus on your academics. Lastly, stress caused by miscellaneous. Most college students pay for their own tuition fees. Stress enters here when having a heavy workload as well.
