College is FREE! What? Would it be grand if college was free to all citizens in the United States. "A college education is not a luxury, it is an necessity” -Andrew Cuomo (Friedman, Z.). College should be free or reduced to all who want to go. Educated people tend to make smart decisions and this world could use a few. If the current costs of college were reduced or provided at no charge, as it is done in other countries, then more Americans could receive more training, people could graduate debt free, and this could make the economy stronger. College is very costly. On average the cost for one year is $31,231 (What's the Price). Many people have to take out loans and over half of them are in debt due to student loans. According to the huffington post, “ Statistically student loans are one percent of all U.S. bankruptcies, which is roughly 15,000 bankruptcies a year” (Living., S. T. ). Room and board is approximately $10,138 at four-year public colleges and for books it is around $1,298 at public colleges (What's the Price). “They have brilliant brains that could help support the world, or have ideas that could change the world completely for the better” (Should a college). However, those ideas vanish when universities are costly and are far away. No one knows what those people have in store for the world because they are not doing something that they thought they were capable of. They would benefit from this because it would not cost much and they could start their future. Therefore, people should strongly believe that colleges/universities should be reduced (Should college). Obama has agreed to this, by saying, “ I would like to propose a government program to make college tuition-free for millions of students, an ambitious plan that would expand educational opportunities across the United States”(Should a

Obama has proposed the idea of having community college be free in order to increase the number of people to own a degree. Joanne Jacobs writes in her article about free community college that “The White House estimates that this would cost $60 billion for over 10 years” to execute. With our economy in shambles at the moment, this can worsen the economic status of the country, adding to the drastic debt that continuously rises on a daily basis. If Obama creates some sort of promise about tuition being free, then another issue could arise, which is having schools become more crowded than what they already are. States need to spend more money in order to increase the…

The federal government already loses over $77 billion a year on educational grants and tax breaks, meanwhile students pay about $60 billion a year to attend public colleges and universities. By the federal government simply footing the bill instead of laundering money, public two and four year institutions could be free. This plan means cutting off aid to private institutions, but they can be left to their own endowments. This revolutionary change would mean no more confusing financial aid systems and no more crushing student loans. It is in the country’s best interest to have young adults who are educated, socially mobile, and not saddled with mountains of…

When someone says free, nobody assumes money. People consider America, or the right to speak freely without worry, not free college. To brand something that costs so much now as free would be quite a large task. “That’s why I am sending this Congress a bold new plan to lower the cost of community college – to zero”, former President Barrack Obama stated in his speech on free tuition. He states that college can cost nothing to anyone, but free will never be free. Credit is not given, only earned. Increasing the already insatiable amount of taxes that American citizens pay for is just the beginning. Lowering the quality of education received when there are thousands of new students going to institutions just for the reason that it is free. Higher education will be suffering in numerous ways, including: increased quantity of students, reduced salary once a degree is attained, not to mention a higher percentage of scholars dropping out. The first two years of college should not be “free.”…

This past January, President Obama unveiled his new $60 billion initiative to make two years of tuition free for community college. Unsurprisingly, political pundits from the right, and more surprisingly, pundits from the left, mobilized to attack his plan. His “America’s College Promise” provides free tuition for the first two years of community college for, in his own words, “everybody who’s willing to work for it.” Ultimately, this news serves as a positive beacon for the future of prospective students, for the community college community, and for the future of America’s middle class and prevailing workforce.…

While going to college is important it can be very tough to pay for it. Some students have to rely on student loans to pay, while others have parents who are paying for it, while others can’t go at all because it would be too hard financially and to their everyday life to be able to go. Finding the right way for you can be a process. While many jobs require a degree, the cost of getting one has risen very dramatically over the years. Colleges seem to be able to raise tuition with a moment’s notice and expect the student to deal with it. The government can only shake an angry finger at them because they don’t want to take complete control over the colleges all over America. How the parents, student, and government look at the cost, the need for a degree, and how they will pay for it determines how much they are willing to…

There may be a few deficient outcomes when it comes to this idea, but let’s look at the bigger picture. There would be many more efficient outcomes to bring the mass of disadvantages on a scale…

When speaking of whether higher education should be free for all, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the problematic issues that would arise. For instance, students would lack that sense of ambition and drive to succeed I know this because I’ve met people who’ve had everything handed to them, and through their actions and behaviors you can see that they seemed not to care as much about education as those who were taught to get things on their own. Also there would be insufficient funds --where would the money come from? And lastly, students would place less value on education. Those are some reasons why I believe higher education shouldn’t be free. The way I see it, going to college is like the ultimate ski slope. It’s terrifying, the great unknown, but you know that if you can just make the first jump off the edge, you’ll have an amazing ride.…
