Ordinarily, the sun’s light captured everything in sight like a mother hugging a child and giving it warmth. From the dark oak bed, I rose because of the unpleasant bites of mosquitoes. The Civil War is always on my mind. After a most successful battle yesterday when our soldiers all left home, relief and happiness came to mind, for there was a chance that we would win. Consequently, that would explain the surge of energy running through my body after waking up. Starting off with breakfast, I walked to my kitchen, the wood underneath my feet start to creak. The closer I walked to the kitchen, the warmer and cozier the atmosphere became. My servant, Julia, prepared breakfast for me today similar to many other days, I always wonder what will breakfast will be. Fresh eggs from my brown feathered hens were soft surrounded by creamy goat cheese, and well-cooked toast was on the plate this morning. Enjoying the meal is a morning ritual,…

The job of the first person that wakes up is to open all windows and doors of the house. You can smell the cooking of eggs, and the making of Cuban coffee. Inside of my aunt’s house I smelled the breakfast she cooked, the flowers from her backyard, and the scent of soap from the bathroom. The hills surrounding the town reflected the rising sun’s light on the dewy grass. The sound of horses galloping enters the house as they pass by. Noises gradually increase throughout the day, but as the day dies out so does all the sounds. At night the town is quiet. The streetlights were dim, but the moon was as white as paper and the stars bright as diamonds. Families are in their homes, eating, talking, playing dominoes, or getting ready for bed. I enjoyed nighttime because my family always stayed up late to talk and laugh. Every night was the same routine. I ate, showered, and laughed until I was…

In the wee hours of the morning my life is the embodiment of a living, breathing dichotomy. Awakening with a wry little smile on my face, I knew I had dreamed of the river, big brown trout, and sweet 3wt bamboo rods. My body screams – “Where’s the coffee”, while my brain questions the sanity of getting up this early on a Saturday. Oblivious to the cacophony, the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. Betraying logic, they forewarn that this pre-dawn moment was the premonition of a great day ahead.…

Following these long feeling weekends, we would then return to our usual daily routines of work and school. The slow paced feeling we lived in in our town made the week days feel full of fun with our friends after school and our school hours filled with knowledge. The time moved so slow, making every minute count during these hours for something. Now it feels like the time moves so fast you can barely keep up. Everyone knew everyone so if you did anything wrong when you were out of…

The clock above my head ticks slowly, the sound ever increasing as the minutes pass by; tick, tick, tick. I normally do not notice the time while I work, usually I am the energizer bunny of workers, in early, out late, always working or willing to, but that day was different; I had a date; a first date to be exact. Finally the time has come for me to go home; I step out into the warm Vegas air, I can smell the familiar scents of fall slowly encroaching on the city. September in Vegas is typically warm, with the average daily temperatures in the upper nineties. I lite a cigarette and walk through the parking garage to my car. My mind was racing; what will he be like, will he be funny, boring; I even allow my thoughts to drift to what he would look like naked.…

Choosing to attend Rock Valley College was not a hard decision for me. It was always one of my top choices when I was deciding on where I would go to continue my education. I ended up choosing RVC over my other options for a few reasons. One reason is that RVC is in Rockford and close to home. After considering all my options, I realized I was not ready to leave home yet. I felt as though I would need a transitional period to help me adjust to college life and RVC would be the perfect place for that. Another reason is the price of RVC. This was a big factor for me because I did not have much financially to afford to go off to a four-year college immediately. Rock Valley gave me the option to take classes that I would take at a four- year for…

Opening my eyes, I was greeted by the bright, shiny sun peeking through the curtains. Getting up I noticed my calendar overfilled with Post-it notes, but there was a bright tomato, red color one, it was something important written as, “SAT Today”. My brain shifted into gears, I quickly sprang out of bed and dashed to my trusty backpack, rambling through past-due…

I remember the first time I stayed awake throughout the night till a beaming light peaked through the window and hit my face like the touch of a baby's hand. Although the morning had risen, the moon had just come up. In the intensity of rushing to school, the need for pleasing others with looks has gone past me. The knots and tangles I feel in my stomach have also reached my hair as I pull parts of my day out of the strands.…

I layed in my small blue bed placed next to the window in the dimly lit room, savoring the sweet, delightful sensation of the sun warming my skin that sent small, tickling sensations through my entire body. I layed there, with eyes wide opened, waiting patiently for the sound that would initiate my morning chores. Once I heard the “cock-a-doodle-do,” I would jump out of bed, grab my miniature sand bucket that was placed on the kitchen table, walk out of the metal door of my house, and would then down the cement stairs, getting a glimpse of my grandpa’s pigs and chickens along the way to the molino. Once the maza was made, My mom and I would make tortillas, releasing the concoction smell of breakfast through the air. After this, I would sweep the house with my custom made broom tailored to my…

We pulse between the gas and brake pedals, like the jerky motion of a springy horse at a public playground. The constant rocking forward and back has started to slowly lull me to sleep, so I turn up the air, unexpectedly puffing the bag around my reward. Immediately, the vents push the scent of new paper into my face, I breathe deeply. The lingering spice of aged leather and printer ink reminds me of long hours curled up in the quiet, delighting in an author’s heady language. I slowly exhale my valued lungful of air, when I notice I am within reach of my home. My heart leaps at the memory of my hushed home; its tranquility will only add to the soothing moments I plan on spending with Mr. Cline, an escape from the hustle of…

It was my thirteenth birthday today. I was becoming a teenager, the adolescent that I had been dreaming of becoming, there was going to be a whole new set of rules. Yet the day would unfold not as I had either intended or expected. I went to the door and gripped the rounded door knob firmly twisting it with ease, slowly tensing my muscles and pulling it open and then releasing the door with a flick of the wrist so that it moved back to a standstill position completely shut. I knew my mother would be awaiting my arrival in the kitchen any moment as my alarm is loud and you can nearly hear it from everywhere in the house. She would have been up for a few hours labouring away in the sauna like kitchen preparing a feast almost fit for a king. I pondered at the hours ahead. Although at around twelve oclock I was departing to my fathers taking the form of public transport known as a bus.…
