College Essay
In today's world, whether for the fear of rejection by others or for the fear of disappointing ourselves, we are used to being disguised. Often, we are simply afraid to find out who we really are. But not always are we disguised or afraid. Sometimes we simply go through life thinking we are something that we are not. We mistake the identity that we have created for ourselves for our real soul. And this is a big challenge on the journey of finding ourselves: not to be deceived by what seems to be our personality on the surface, but to dig deeper and find out who we really are. College is known as one of the best places to embark on this journey.

Why is the journey known to be so risky? Besides the fact that it is easy to mistake what is on the outside for what is on the inside, there are deeper, more important, and therefore, more dangerous risks that comes with being oneself. In my understanding, one of those is the fact that others do not always accept us for who we are; that is a well known truth. However, a less well known, yet simple fact is that we, ourselves, do not always accept us for who we are. What is the danger of fully accepting not only our strengths but also, weaknesses that none of us are spared of? Everybody wants to be perfect, that is why. With accepting and acting fully like ourselves and not the superheroes we all want to be, comes a high possibility of disappointment and confusion. What if someone who thought himself brave and courageous finds out he is in reality a coward? Imagine the disappointment and devastation that person must feel. Perhaps even harder than finding out who we are, is accepting who we are. The answer is to learn to love oneself completely and to embrace self-identity.

Without knowing of ourselves, we are lost in this world. As cliché as it sounds; we cannot begin to understand the world around us without first understanding ourselves at the deepest, most personal levels. It is so beautiful to be the way we really

Everyone carries the stories of their lives wrapped around their shoulders. Some people carry feather-light stories; other people’s stories, heavy as bricks threaten to break their spirit as they carry its burden. In my opinion, the best stories – fiction or not − begin with the famous and treasured words of “Once upon a time.” So allow me to share with you my tale of a hellion land, filled to the brim with vagabonds in every corner, and survival of the fittest.…

Growing up, people always asked “You was I before the world told me who to be”. This statement stuck because as an individual I was being me. Dr. Seuss states in a quote “Why fit in when you were born to standout” (Seuss). This quote is another spark for the interest in the development of oneself. As a student of the UIC's Honor College I believe that I will bring new innovative ideas to my fellow students and to those around me. I not only will aspire to better myself, but to encourage those around me to be the best student they can be. As the youngest sibling I have endured through many challenges. From struggling to explain my opinion about a subject in a way that will back up my reasoning to asserting my role as a leader. Although at times I have felt like giving up, I have prevailed. I learned how to state my opinion in a way that is informative, yet not rude. One challenge that I felt I excelled in exceptionally is being a leader. I have immersed myself in multiple school activates that leadership is a necessity. I am currently the president of the twelfth grade book club and a board member of the Senior Committee. With the skills that I have learned as a result of those positions I will be able to implement them in the classroom and in school events. As a student of UIC’s Honor College I plan to make use of all the advantages given to me. With the benefits provided to me I plan to take advantage of the honor courses that apply to Physical Therapy. I would also like to study abroad if I were given the opportunity to because I believe that you can learn a lot by immersing yourself in different cultures. It would be an honor for me to take part in the Honor College as a tutor because as a student who has had the experience of being both a tutor and a student I know that it can be a rewarding experience.…

Think of the phrase “finding yourself”. What does that truly mean? What makes it possible for a man to be able to find out who he himself is? Must we all be peaceful? Ghandi said, “Each one has to find his peace from within. And peace to be real must be unaffected by outside circumstances.” In the Bhagavad Gita, we learn the lesson of finding our inner selves (“twin”) first before answering questions of others. According to the God Krishna, our desires are what cause our evil deeds, and in order for us to be free, we must control our desires. This can only be done through practice.…
