College Admissions Essay: What Makes Me Who I Am?
“If we were meant to stay in one place, we’d have roots instead of feet.” Rachel Wolchin
There are only so many things that a textbook can teach you. We must explore and experience things first hand. Get uncomfortable and encounter the unknown. It’s how you find out who you are. It’s how you know what you want.
I have always had a knack for traveling. Since a young age I have found comfort in going to places I have never been. Embracing the culture and questioning why things are done a certain way and exploring the incredible world that I am surrounded by. It brings me peace just being somewhere I have never been. I think it is important to be put in situations that you might not be familiar with and learn how to adapt, how to survive on your own. It’s important to go to unfamiliar places and meet unfamiliar people.
Academically I have always set high standards for myself. Some would consider me an overachiever, but I’ve always been driven to want the best for myself and I think it shows. I am very critical of myself and my success. I believe academics show drive and how motivated a person is. The work you put in shows how much you want something. I will be

I would like to grow as a person and find out more about who I am. I want to be uncomfortable. I want to be put in a place I’ve never been, away from everything I’ve ever known and I want to fight through it and grow from it. This program would give me exactly that. It would force me to learn by experience. I would be on my own and I would learn about myself and grow as a person. When I pursue something I like to know every possible detail I can about it. I like to be prepared. By studying abroad, I can learn things and be that much more prepared for the real world after college. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that college is just a step on the way into the real world and I want to be as prepared as possible for the world and each thing it

As a student, I strive to do my best in school. I have received High Honors for at least all of my years here at St. Patrick. When it comes to my academics, I do not take it as a joke. My academics can make or break me, but I choose for them to make me the best student I can be. Learning new material is something that I look forward to everyday because I know that every material can open up another door in my future. I show a positive effect when it comes to learning things. As an academic person, I joined the Decathlon team. It is a very studious, yet fun, experience. I studied as much as a I could and I knew that in the end all my studying would pay off.…

In addition, I have always enjoyed traveling and tourism. There is something so enthralling about adventuring to a new place and discovering what it has to offer. Every year my dad’s side of the family goes to Sunriver, Oregon. I remember being young and each year, we would make it a priority to find some new place to explore. We would go hiking on trails and through caves, and whitewater rafting down the Deschutes River. Those experiences have instilled within me a sense of adventure.…

I like options, I like security, and I like power. With these wants, I knew at a very early age that I would enter business and thus I attended a college that specializes in the subject. In my first position out of school, I was hired by Dunhill Equities as a cold-caller. After several weeks of being hung up on by angry prospects, I decided that this career path would not lead me to success. I then moved within the firm to a position as sales assistant. While this was by no means my dream job, I learned a tremendous amount about business, and I gained useful exposure to the world of finance. Unfortunately, the company hit a period of instability, and after ten months I transferred with my boss to Coleman & Company. Thirteen months later, that company also began to fail, and I began to search for another path to advancement. With two strikes against me, I hit a home run and was hired by Sanford Bernstein into a challenging job with limitless opportunity for growth.…

Who am I? That is a good question. I guess I really never stop to think about it. Most people are defined by their family or their career. For example, if I were to ask "who is Barack H. Obama?" most people would say that he is the president of the United States. If you asked about any-one, they would usually explain who the person is by what they do or who their family is. So if you want to know that, well, I am a senior at Milford High School, I am the daughter of Eric and Pam B....and I am 17 years old. My real name is Sam, but most people would call me “Sam” or “Sammie”. I was born in the United States of America and lived with my grandmother. My grandmother would look at me as a beautiful young lady because I have grown up from a little…

I always strived to do the best that I can, in everything that I do, and this especially applies to academics. In 6th grade, I joined the honors program at my middle school; from then on forward, I made sure than my work was of high enough quality so that the following year I would be placed in honors courses. These courses are what I believe prepared me for my success in high school. I got a taste of what it was like to be in an environment where every pupil was hungry for an education and for knowledge, and I grew to want to learn as much as my classmates. I entered high school with courses that upperclassmen had that challenged me more than anything else had before. It was during my freshman year of high school that I realized that I couldn’t…

As I entered my new life as a college student I had no idea what to expect. It is something that you have to enter not knowing if you are prepared or not. Finding out who you are is about experiencing what college has to offer. My best self can be accomplished easily if I keep my mind on the right track. I will go to class and work my hardest to make the best grades that I can. To me listening and taking in what the professor has to say is highly rewarding. Most people don’t show up because they think it is pointless. I feel a bit of confidence in myself knowing I obtain the will to dedicate myself to my studies. I usually make it a goal to try something…

The perennial debate about nature and nurture--which is the more potent shaper of the human essence?--is perennially rekindled. It flared up again in the London Observer of Feb. 11, 2001. REVEALED: THE SECRET OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR, read the banner headline. ENVIRONMENT, NOT GENES, KEY TO OUR ACTS. The source of the story was Craig Venter, the self-made man of genes who had built a private company to read the full sequence of the human genome in competition with an international consortium funded by taxes and charities. That sequence--a string of 3 billion letters, composed in a four-letter alphabet, containing the complete recipe for building and running a human body--was to be published the very next day (the competition ended in an arranged tie). The first analysis of it had revealed that there were just 30,000 genes in it, not the 100,000 that many had been estimating until a few months before.…

Hardworking, committed, and inspired are just a few words that describe me when it comes to reaching my goals. Since the age of ten all, I ever wanted to do was to make my parents proud of me. I figured that the best way to do that is to have them see me going after my dreams and goals and achieving them. Ever since I can remember I loved going to school. I would be so excited to go to school and learn something new. I would get joy out learning new things and gaining knowledge and until this day I still do. The rush I would get when I received my grades back and saw that I got an A was incredible. I always loved to get good grades and every time I had a test coming up I could not help but study nonstop until the day of the exam. I have my parents to thank for that because they have always pushed me to do better in school and learn as much as I can. I am very proud of the person that I have become because of them a hardworking and devoted person that will not let anything stand between her and her dreams.…
