College Admissions Essay: How Singing Changed My Life
A few friends and I were driving around our quiet neighborhood, blasting Katy Perry over the AUX cord. ~California girls, We're undeniable~ Instinctively, my lips moved along, the notes inches away from escaping my mouth. At the last moment, however, my jaws clamped shut. I simply could not bring myself to sing in front of my friends. I held it in, silent in the backseat.
For me, singing turns the usual flow of life into a vibrant explosion of activity; it's my retreat from the frenzy of daily life. When I sing, my mind remains in a blank state, lost in concentration.
Despite my passion for singing, I still tried my best to hide it. I was brought up to believe that singing was for girls, and I was certainly not willing ruin my “tough guy” image. As a result, I mostly pursued my musical endeavors in private. Performing for a live …show more content…
Inspired by the music from other content creators, I was determined to try it for myself. Every week, I spent hours upon hours of sitting in front of a computer screen recording; if I messed up, I could easily try again. Thanks to YouTube, I began to confront my lingering sense of self-consciousness in my musical abilities. Beyond music, I began to upload skits and vlogs, where I used my ideas to create unique scenarios, letting my imagination run wild.
To mix it up, I would try new techniques or add a tad of humor.
Initially, my videos would get little to no views, but for years, my passion drove me to continue. Sure enough, my persistence eventually paid off; over time, I gained over a hundred thousand views on my YouTube channel. It’s flattering to see the positive feedback and to know that others give up their time just to watch my videos.
