Collective Security During The Cold War

The united nations is built off of the principle of collective security. Collective security is supposed to prevent future conflicts that will happen. Collective security is used so if a nation attacks another nations everyone should help the nation being attacked to prevent a war. The Cold War has many examples of foreign policy within it. After World War II America thought that the best defense against the soviet union was containment. The containment strategy lead to a massive buildup of weapons between the superpowers and is known as the arms race. American officials were encouraging the development of atomic weapons. The Soviets tested an atom bomb so in response President Truman announced we were building an even more destructive atomic weapon which was the hydrogen bomb.
By July American troops entered the war against North korea. America was trying to contain communism and didn’t want it to spread. Three years after the Korean War started it came to an end. 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives during the war (History.com Staff).
