All people no matter who they are and no matter if they realize it or not, surround themselves with people who act or think like them, this is because humans naturally want to interact with people who share the same ideas and beliefs as they do themselves. When interacting with new or different people it can cause one to have mixed feelings about the experience. The opinion about a new group can either be positive or negative but having the experience is important to be able to decide a reasonable judgment about the unknown culture. It’s amazing how someone can live their life so close to a community but never come to understand what they are truly about. One Sunday I accidentally happened upon a service at my church which was the Nigerian mass. I was so shocked and didn’t know what to do. I decided to stay and see what the service was about because I was curious. Throughout the mass there were many different types of traditions that were unfamiliar to me. They preformed many chants and had rain sticks and spoke in a language that I didn’t understand. Also the people in the church were people what I have never seen before. The entire room seemed like a foreign place. The environment was so unknown even if it was my church. I knew that the concept of the mass and service was the same a I was used to but the portrayal of the mass was so foreign to me that I felt like I had never experienced anything so strange in my life. I was so glad that I was introduced to this new and exciting culture because now I have a better understanding to what the Nigerian traditions are really about. When I first arrived at the service I was extremely skeptical to what I was going to experience and unsure if I was going to like it or not. In the end I am so glad that I went and now have a better insight into that new and exciting society that was once unfamiliar to me. I, like all people, intentionally want to be around people who look and act as I do. This is partly because all

What really caught my eye were the three Buddha statues where we were going to have the service. The statues looked like they were made of gold but I just thinking it was the lighting. As I entered I felt a sense of calmness it was very different than a Christian church. In a Christian church I always felt tense or felt uneasy because of all the people jumping around singing songs like some type of indigenous tribes. On the other hand going to a catholic church always made me feel guilty or depressed. Being in this temple was different I actually felt welcomed while everyone was calm and collected and not bouncing off the walls. As we entered the area where they have the service we had to sit down on these cushions and after a little bit of talking they started the meditation. We repeated nam-myoho-renge-kyo over and over with a little bit of different words mixed in during the meditation. While doing it I was constantly feeling this sense of euphoria it felt like I was in a trace with everyone joining in. honestly, it felt weird because I never had a sensation like that before and just like that it was over. An hour passed and I didn’t even notice my legs were cramped but my body felt like it was floating, I actually thought I did some black magic or something but everyone was a cheerful mood. We didn’t stay long after the service was finished but one thing I…

The way in which I had envisioned their services was very similar to the way in which it turned out to be. It was a very calming and relaxing environment and there were very little interaction within the people, other than the chanting of the scriptures. The only aspect of the service that was I was surprised by was the fact that was very little music or anything that could even resemble music within the service. I generally think of a service having some type of instruments playing, but there were no instruments or any form of music other than the people…

Finally, the last service I attended which I did not stay for a long time was The First Free Methodist Church. The service started with singing hymns, and we were singing with the choir, then the leader read from the gospel. However, the leader started to say two stories happened to him about how God is everywhere with us, and every situation in all of the creation at any given time, and in every manner, time and place.…

For my observation, I went to a usual Catholic Mass at a parish local to me. I analyzed the texts being used, the words being spoken, and the level of involvement of every member present. I focused on the responses of those in attendance during prayer and the homily, a scripturally-based reflection not consisting of doctrinal instruction, spoken by the priest. Additionally, I attended Eucharistic Adoration, a ritual where one sits in front of the consecrated bread, which is believed to be the true presence of Christ, contemplating the Mystery of Christ. I observed the people who entered and left and if the read Catholic literature or wrote.…

My earliest memories of a religious service was the first time we stepped foot into the new church. There was just something even at a young age didn’t seem quite right with me. I can remember the first time that I stepped foot into the sanctuary, I was fascinated that the boards in the sanctuary was in different colors. The pulpit was set up in such a way that even as a kid, I could tell that it was going to be extremely strict and uninviting.…

To begin, I was nervous about attending a service for a faith to which I did not belong and which was not even part of my heritage. Previously when I had attended Baptist worship, I had gone along or with a member of my family, who belonged to the church. I wasn’t sure how people of a different religion would react to having someone who was not of their faith visiting their place of worship. However, as soon as we walked into the synagogue, the people there were very friendly and not at all unused to having visitors. There was a collection of pamphlets set out for anyone unfamiliar with the Jewish religion and with Sabbath services and there were nametags for us to wear. The people were very friendly, asking us if we would like to know anything more about the synagogue. There were people standing in small groups too talking and catching up with the happenings of the week before.…

For my cultural report, I chose to go to a Filipino Christianity church. I was born and raised as a Buddhist and I don't really have a clue about the religion of Christianity. I also didn't have many Christian friends growing up, so I decided to pick the Christianity church because I was always wondered about the services at church. I had a lot of expectation attending the church service and I thought that everything were going to be like how they do it in the movies but I was very wrong.…

On April 3, I visited the 9:00 AM mass at Holy Family Catholic Church in Kirkland with my grandma who has been a practicing Catholic her entire life. The church had a very welcoming atmosphere. The church building is somewhat simple, without many of the top decorations. The architecture is simple, and resembles that of many other small churches. There is a steep area of the roof that is a common characteristic of a church's architecture. On the inside there were many rows of pews from the front near the altar to the back. On the altar there was an organ, a large cross, and a hanging, medium-sized stained glass.…

    Church Visitation

On the first Sunday in the month of April, I attended Faith Tabernacle Apostolic church. My initial observation when I walked into the church was that most of the congregation was of African-American decent. This was expected by me because I had been informed of this prior to attending. This was one of the reasons why I desired to sit in on their service. This was a different setting then what I am used to at my home church, where only about thirty three percent of the congregation is African-American. Once the service got underway, I was very excited to see how involved the congregation gets into worship. There were people dancing, shouting, and worshiping with everything they had. This was somewhat comforting because this often occurs at my home church. The worship was a little longer than what I am used to, and it seemed to drag on for longer than it should have. During a break in the worship, all of the visitors were asked to stand as to be greeted. This part of the service was one of my favorites. After the visitors all stood, the entire congregation came over to greet each and every visitor, as to welcome them personally. This was able to take place due to the small size of the congregation which was about 60 people. After the worship part of the service had ended, the message was brought by Pastor Jones Foote. The message was a little bit lengthy, but was presented very well. During the message I was not able to detect any doctrinal differences between the Assembly of God beliefs and theirs. I am sure there are differences, but the message that was brought forth did not expose those differences. At the end of the message, like all churches do, an alter call was given for those in the congregation seeking salvation. There were a couple of people that went forward to become saved which…

It was a blissful morning in the 8th of June, 2013. I remembered my excitement mixed with a tint of nervousness when my batchmates and I were on our way to Sinagtala, a few blocks away from the church. My expectations were in a blur when we started skimming down the dirtpath to the houses we were going to visit that time. People were staring at us as if we were foreigners. Wide paths turned to narrow almost-unpassable walkways, the houses were so close to each other that I almost thought everyone there was one family, and an common unexplainable diffused smell wafted in the environment; having born and raised up from a different country, it was all a sight I never saw before. Then, I said to God inwardly, “Lord, I now know why you brought us to this place.” I was a little nervous, yet there’s this tingle of hope and excitement that I feel for that place.…
