Cole Quotes
“My theory on life is that life is beautiful. Life doesn't change. You have a day, and at night, and a mouth, and a year. We people change - we can be miserable or we can be happy. It’s what you make of your life.” (Brainy Quotes) Cole is a 15 year old boy from Minneapolis. He has dealt with the police for half of his life because his parents don’t care about him.The reason why Cole beats up other kids is, he doesn’t care about his life at all. Why Cole needs to change is, he’s constility beating up kids for no reason. When he is older if he doesn’t stop, he will be in jail for a long time. The three reasons why I think Cole has shown a change is, he owns up to things, Cole wants to go back to the island and Cole wants to help Peter through …show more content…
Plus, he is not blaming people for stuff. Why this is true is, at the end of the book he started showing trust and responsibility and now he is showing owning up to things. The island punishment is getting to know him now on how he acts and respects stuff such as, the food he is given and his shelter. For an example, “‘After an awkward silence, Cole knew he had to say something. “I know that saying sorry about my attitude isn’t enough, but I want you to know that I am sorry.” He paused. “When I was carrying the rock this morning, I realized that I wouldn’t get over my anger unless I quit blaming others for everything. That’s why I got mad the last two days. I was still blaming you guys.”’ (167) This quote is important because he wants to own up to things such as saying sorry to Gravey and Edwin. What this reveals about Cole is, he wants to be the better person, not the one who is really bad and doesn’t think straight about his actions that he is making. This is one reason why I think Cole has changed throughout the story.
Another good example for showing how Cole has changed is, Cole wants to go back to the island for the second time. He actually wants to make a difference in his life. Cole did really bad the first time he was on the island so they took him off for about six months. Then the circle said he didn’t finish so he has to go back. Cole actually took responsibility when the circle said

Then they want to be friends again. What I mean by that is, Peter committed suicide because he was really depressed right now at the moment. Now that Cole has changed, he wants to help people because he knows what they are going through. The last piece of evidence is, “‘ Suddenly Peter sprang up, shoving Cole hard, and sending him stumbling to the ground. “ Stay away from me! I don’t need your help!” he screamed. “I’m so sorry,” Cole repeated. “You’re not sorry for anything!” Peter shouted. He kicked at the ground, pelting Cole with gravel and dirt.”’ (235) What this quote is saying is, Cole is trying to help Peter because he knows what he is going through right now, but Peter doesn’t want that help. What this reveals about Cole is he has changed and wants to help others change too. This advances the plot because we now know that Cole has changed and is going to be someone that cares about life and

Cole is a dynamic character and has defiantly changed throughout the story. I know this because at the beginning of the book he tries to kill the Spirit Bear and it says "Cole found courage in the Spirit Bear's stillness. It must have been scared. Why else would it just stand there instead of attacking? Cole felt his smoldering anger ignite"(Mikaelsen 64). In this example, Cole attacks the Spirit Bear simply because he thought it defined him. He also doesn't appreciate nature and thinks he can take it down. Cole thinks life is useless until he thinks about the baby sparrows. Cole thinks," The sparrows were so frail, helpless, and innocent. They hadn't deserved to die"(Mikaelsen 82). You can tell he defiantly has a change of heart when he…

Cole does not seem to have any control of the unforgettable emotions. “Edwin told me once that anger was a memory never forgotten. He’s right” (Page 130). The main cause of his anger is his own angry and alcoholic father and shy hopeless mother. Cole is beaten up by his angry father without any mercy, and his shy mother only watches him getting beaten. She does not even attempt to stop her husband from beating her own son. These irresponsible actions by Cole’s parents, made him feel that he was worthless and lived his life for no reason. “You don’t get it do you? My parents are divorced and don’t give a rat if I live or die. All they care about is themselves. Nobody cares about me. All my life I’ve been dumped on” (Page 27). As a result, the anger that was building inside of him eventually got out of control. This anger causes Cole to commit crimes. Cole robbed and trashed a hardware store. Peter, a boy at Cole’s school, found out that Cole did this act of violence. So, Peter told on Cole. Cole found out, in which he got very angry and mad. Instead of confronting Peter, Cole decided to smash Peter’s head against the sidewalk, very badly.Once Cole was sent to the island of Drake in Alaska, Cole felt depressed and angry at the same time. Cole eventually burnt down his cabin. Another example of his anger is dealing with the Spirit Bear. The Spirit Bear was calmly looking at Cole. Cole realized that this bear was not afraid of him. So, Cole let out his anger and tried to kill the bear. Instead of Cole hurting…

    Never Give Up Quotes

I think one of the themes in this book “Exposed” is Never Give Up. Don’t ever give up on anything you want to and never let it slip without fighting. In the book it says, " She's been avoiding me all week long.” page 45. Yes the girl was avoiding her, but she never stopped trying to talk to her, like in this quote she talks about it with her, " Im sorry, Liz, but I can’t be with you anymore.Every time i’m with you I see him.” pg 131 " I thought we were friends! Forever-Best-Friends!” pg 130 I think she was brave for trying to keep cool and try to fix it. She never gave up on the friendship she want to still have and have her inner life.Another theme I thought was in this book is trust, it talks a lot about how Liz doesn’t believe Kate yet…

    Julian Enoch Quotes

This quote makes it evident that Julian’s mother has not moved on from the past and the past continues to impact her judgment of people in the present. Identical to Enoch, who could not let go of his past and create new relationships with people, she cannot move on and accept the people in her society. The quote further proves that the past is very important for her through her constant rejections of Julian’s new ideas. The past has clear impact on her present life as she behaves as if she were still in the past where she was superior to African-Americans. Similar to Enoch, she is visually and verbally awkward and rude to people of a different race due to her inability to move…

    Dante Love Quotes

Love is defined as an intense feeling of strong affection, and for Dante in La Vita Nuova it was nothing but the emotion that changed his world. Love is scribed as something that’ll make people go to extreme lengths in order to fulfill their desires. However, Dante fell in love when he was merely a child at nine years old, and spent the rest of his adult life in self-reflection sobbing in his own heartache. The innocence of a child’s crush versus a gentleman’s love sickness is vast however, for Dante love left him in the lowest adolescent form. Nonetheless, love at certain stages of life displays very different characteristics based on the maturity of the person when looking at Dante at this point…
