Cold War and Communism
The purpose of the film “Duck and Cover” was to help people understand what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. Although the film was a simplistic way to explain what to do in the event of such an attack; the duck and cover method would hardly prove to be effective.
I believe that those who lived under the threat of a nuclear war were filled with anxiety and uneasiness, not knowing when or if such an attack would happen. Couple that with the various drills they may have went on in schools and businesses and you have a society on edge.
Thankfully the true magnitude of the damage that a nuclear attack could cause has not been realized as the threat of terrorism. Living in a society where there is a threat of terrorism is where we are today. The terrorism threat has been made real for us all and personally to many as well. An act of terrorism can be potentially carried out by anyone from your neighbor to your local grocery store clerk. On Tuesday September 11, 2001, the threat of terrorism became real to the entire world as it played out on center stage in the U.S. That day over 3,000 people lost their lives ("9/11 Attacks", 2014).
Similarities can be drawn between the feelings of individuals who lived during the threat of nuclear war with those who now live during the threat of terrorism. Both threats brought or bring about feelings of anxiety and edginess. However, the fact that we have not had a nuclear attack and we have had terror attacks makes the latter more of a concern. As I previously stated, terror attacks could come from the least likely of sources. Whereas the a nuclear attack, although just as or more deadly would more than likely come from outside of the country with the U.S having some form of defense.
