Inman escapes out of the hospital where he is being treated so he can finally embark on his journey toward his love. After this accident Inman believes that war solves nothing. While Inman is away and heading back to Ada, Ada is in grief because of the loss of her father and wealth and how her father’s farm responsibilities are now all given to Ada. Ada learns a lot of thing from Ruby the farm girl, also Ruby starts to ease up upon people, because of her rough past that Ruby has went through. While Inman is walking his way home, Inman is joined by Veasey because Veasey is also on the escape like Inman, but it doesn’t last long because later Veasey is killed and Inman escapes alive. Inman continues in his journey, he meets several characters that opened up their homes for Inman. Inman picks up a couple of lessons from the characters that he applied to his life. After the long journey, Inman finally meets Ada.. They barely recognized each other, and they caught up with each other for a few days, until that day when Inman went out to surrender to the federates.
