The novel takes off at the time around the Civil War; Inman is critically wounded due to the fact that he is a confederate soldier during this time. After about ten years Inman finally decides to go back home to Cold Mountain. Inman wrote a letter to his dearly beloved Ada, saying that he will return soon so that they can talk about future plans with each other and also discuss the present and the past with each other, like all the hardships and trials each individually had to overcome in order to finally be with each other. Inman escapes out of the hospital where he is being treated so he can finally embark on his journey toward his love. After this accident Inman believes that war solves nothing. While Inman is away and heading back to Ada, Ada is in grief because of the loss of her father and wealth and how her father’s farm responsibilities are now all given to Ada. Then Ruby comes along to help Ada raise the farm and get back unto her feet, since Ada went from rich to poor in a snap of a finger. Ada learns a lot of thing from Ruby the farm girl, also Ruby starts to ease up upon people, because of her rough past that Ruby has went through. While Inman is walking his way home, Inman is joined by Veasey because Veasey is also on the escape like Inman, but it doesn’t last long because later Veasey is killed and Inman escapes alive. Inman continues in his journey, he meets several characters that opened up their homes for Inman. Inman picks up a couple of lessons from the characters that he applied to his life. After the long journey, Inman finally meets Ada.. They barely recognized each other, and they caught up with each other for a few days, until that day when Inman went out to surrender to the federates. Inman was ambushed and killed by Birch from the home guards. Then ten years later Ada has a daughter to raise, and Ruby out of all people is married.
