Single-Sex or Co-Ed Schools: Boys and girls SHOULD be educated together.

In the UAE, most schools are single-sex. Some people believe that this kind of school offers more benefits for the student. However, others think that coeducational ones are better. This essay will examine the pros and cons of co-ed and single-sex schools.

There are several arguments in favour of mixed schools. The first argument is that students will learn to communicate with each other. This is important so that the sexes won’t have problems in marriage or work in the future. It is also claimed that boys in co-ed schools might study harder in order to look good in front of the girls. As a result, the classroom atmosphere might be better. Finally, people posit that co-ed schools are more interesting. Students get to know different viewpoints.

Nevertheless, there are many convincing arguments against co-ed schools. The first point is that students can remain more focused on their work. Boys and girls may not concentrate on their studies in a mixed class. Another counterargument is that there is a big difference between girls and boys. Since they don’t think in the same ways, they should not be taught the same. Last, co-ed schools are against some religions. To clarify, they violate Islamic injunctions and social morals.

In conclusion, single-sex schools and mixed schools both have advantages and disadvantages. A compromise may be the best answer: girls and boys could attend the same school but be taught in different classes. Perhaps this is the way forward. (245 words)

    It is proven that students in single-sex schools feel less pressure than their coeducational counterparts. This decrease in pressure results in many advantages for both males and females. Without the distraction of impressing females, males are less competitive and more cooperative. In addition, girls are more willing to speak in public, and exhibit higher levels of confidence and self-esteem. With this decrease in pressure, students will enjoy the learning environment more. This results in an increased attendance frequency because students look forward to school, rather than dreading to attend. Single sex education increases opportunities for leadership as well. In a female single sex environment, girls hold leadership positions that they might not have the opportunity to hold in a coeducational environment. Furthermore, males may be less inhibited to get involved and assume leadership roles in the absence of females. Another benefit of single-sex education is the ability to tailor the environment towards either males or females. Single-Sex Schools have been discriminated against by many due to the belief that students will not be able to function comfortably with the opposite sex when leaving to attend a co-educational College or University. This belief is also tied with the thought that single-sex schools represent segregation; many people do believe that these types of schools promote the separation of males and females. Some also believe that all single-sex schools result in people not being able to function socially with opposite gender when place in the real world. However, all of these beliefs are far from the truth. Studies have shown that attending single-sex schools can be very beneficial in succeeding both academically and socially. Gender-separate format can boost grades and test scores for both girls and boys (Haag, 2000). Single-Sex education is especially beneficial for young females and young males. This type of education offers both genders a more comfortable way of learning, students feel more comfortable asking questions and speaking up in a classroom setting.
