CODIFICATION
1. It is one of the functions of stores management. Codification is a process of representing each item by a number, the digit of which indicates the group, the sub group, the type and the dimension of the item.
2. Codification in an industry is the systematic concise representation of equipment, raw materials, tools, spares, supplies etc.in an abbreviated form employing alphabets, numerals, colours, symbols etc.

OBJECTIVES OF CODIFICATION 1. Bringing all items together 2. To enable putting up of any future item in its proper place 3. To classify an item according to its characteristics 4. To give an unique code number to each item to avoid duplication and ambiguity 5. To reveal excessive variety and promote standardization and variety reduction 6. To fix essential parameters for specifying an item 7. To enable data processing and analysis
ADVANTAGES OF CODIFICATION 1. A systematic discipline helps the users to identify the required item correctly, stock controllers to issue, purchase authority to buy the correct item and organisations to select the correct item from the existing inventory. 2. An identification number achieves economy in transactions and makes automatic data processing possible. 3. Codification prevents overstocking and reduces purchase cost by revealing duplicate and interchangeable items. 4. Codification helps in rationalisation, standardisation and propagates the use of standard items 5. Reveals interchangeability of items within and between the Services. 6. Accurate and reliable recording and accounting 7. Easier computerisation 8. Important factor in indenting, purchasing and issuing activities. 9. Wrong identification results in wrong purchases. 10.
