When defining ethical behavior, often the relationship between police officers and minorities comes to mind. There have been many incidents that have led to minorities feeling there is a lack of ethics being upheld in the police department (Glover, 2007). Recently Michael Brown lost his life as well as Travon martin; in both cases, the people taking the lives of these young men were white males. No wrong doing has been found in…
The United States of America, its government, and the Criminal Justice Administration are all governed under the same set of governmental laws. These governmental laws are documented within the U.S. Constitution. Each amendment to the Constitution provides basic rights for citizen of the United States. Signed by delegates and presided by President George Washington, the Constitution was designed to provide a stronger federal government under the three branches; executive, legislative and judicial (The Constitution, 2014) In proceeding involving…
Ethical issues in policing reach back to the early ages of law enforcement. The profession of policing plays a vital role in the rationale and motivation of how officers conduct themselves while on and off duty. This is a primary focus point of the society in which they work, due to the society’s level of trust and confidence in the officers to act accordingly and responsibly without any negative person vengeances or vendetta. As a result of the numerous negative encounters of officers interacting with the public, which has been mainstreamed by the media, there is a heightened sense of entitlement and false responsibility of citizens to report to higher authorities or the media when they do not get whatever it is that they want or receive the…
Law enforcement is successful in many facets of its duties and responsibilities. Even with all of the success law enforcement is able to accomplish, there are some ethical failures where improvement can be made. Examples of some ethical failures would be the code of silence, a conscience lack of team work amongst agencies, or leadership failing to remember, while they have a duty to the public, they also have a duty to their line level personnel.…
By the nature of the job of law enforcement one can conclude that there are many occasions when a police officer can face up to with a moral dilemma. The question is when will an officer be faced with one. Throughout an officer career he has referred to the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, which is a code that represents everything that a police officer should be. The Peace Officers Research Association of California established this code in 1956 and since then has made its way throughout the country to Police departments and its officers. Many department mission statement have been derived from the very words that appear on the code of ethics.…
I chose this subject because I feel that before embarking on a career in law enforcement it is fundamental to understand how to play by the book without getting ostracized by ones peers. The purpose of this paper is to outline proper behavior while paying attention to factors that will effectively limit corruption.…

Ethical considerations could be a concern for law enforcement officers moving forward into the future. Officers obviously have a desire to be ethical and do their job with the utmost morale possible, however the dilemmas they face to catch criminals and remain as ethical as possible is difficult. Off duty behavior, brutality, and corruption are big concerns now and for the future. People who regulate the law often find themselves needing to bend or break the law. More often than not, their fellow law enforcement officers will treat them with a lighter punishment or give no punishment at all because of their association with the governing association (Writing, 2014)…
I have chosen for my research paper the career of an FBI agent. In this paper I will explain some interesting facts about what it takes to become an agent, what skills are necessary, what the requirements are, benefits of the position and many, many more. I chose to discuss what it takes to become an FBI agent because it is a jo I have wanted to have for a long time. It is why I am in criminal justice. The fact is very few people know what it actually takes to become one. Hopefully after this you will.…
Code of conduct is a set of rules outlining the responsibilities and expectations of a particular person who is a member of a group or even a community. When I analyze the definition of code of conduct I think of the word laws and how both definitions are different and similar to one another. The definition of laws is a system of rules, regulations, principles, and guidelines that are established and enforced by an institution or even a community to govern behavior and order. In simple comparison laws act as the main idea of the picture that everyone must follow, and if not followed the way that the law is set then one is breaking the law. On the other hand, code of conduct can be differentiated depending on the situation you are a part of; such as, a particular group, job, or community.…
My first interviewee officers jack Davidson, patrolman from Somers point police department. When interviewing Patrolman Davidson, I found the following to be his impressions of the police force in general. Officer Davidson spoke of why ethics and character are important in the field of law enforcement. His response was that ethics and character go hand in hand. In law enforcement it seems that there are so many reasons to do the right thing. The reasons began with public opinion and also should include their influence on the youth who will be growing up to be citizens of the city, state, or country. If a police officer does not behave with good character he is not a good example, and may, in fact, become a bad example for a child to believe is acceptable. To uphold the law, one must be able to look above all the things that could influence them to behave poorly. If an officer allows someone to change their outlook in a negative way, whether it is a criminal, a family member, or even another police officer, then they are not displaying good character. Ethics are as important, if not more important, than character. One can display an incredible character, but when it comes time to follow the rules of ethics, the temptations of simple favors by the law-abiding citizens of the community can sway an officer’s choices, and can cause them to make a poor choice. Even the slightest favor from someone can lead to a dangerous future occurrence. If a citizen provides freebies for a police officer, then the officer is expected to provide special favors for the citizen. This can be expected in forms of protection, additional police presence, or even something disreputable like fixing a ticket, or letting them off with a warning instead of a ticket. Most people do not give things without expecting something in return. When Officer Davidson was asked if he felt that police officers…
Before we can talk about ethics in criminal justice and the slippery slope, we must first define what ethics is. Ethics is, “that branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions” (Dictionary, n.d.). Having defined ethics how does it play out in criminal justice? It goes without saying that every department should have ethics training, and it should extend beyond just the field of criminal justice. It applies to everyone, and it is values that can help us make those tough decisions. Ethics are not always easy, and what is ethically right might not be the most famous decision a person can make. Without a department of ethical people, there is no telling the…
The basis for the conclusion reached, methods of evaluation, and reasoning, requires ethical guidelines and ethical individuals conducting evaluations of programs. According to Dr. Paul and Dr. Elder ethical reasoning abilities are important for numerous reasons. Dr. Paul and Dr. Elder explain how the majority of individuals “confuse ethics with behavior, in accordance with social conventions, religious beliefs, and the law instead of seeing ethics as a domain unto itself, a set of concepts and principles that guide us in determining what behavior helps or harms sentient creatures” (Paul & Elder, 2003). Another definition of ethics given by…
