Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the study, scope and limitations of the study, theoretical and conceptual framework, and the definition of terms.
Background of the Study Chrysanthemum is one of the most popular flowers grown in our country for its diversified beauty of colors, shapes, shades and keeping quality (AgriInfo, 2011). It is one of the plants that help the economy flourish. Local markets in the Philippines have supplies of the flower. Although cut flowers, especially Chrysanthemum are grown throughout the Philippines, the industry still suffers the lack of supplies during Valentine's Day, All Saints’ Day, School Graduation, May Flower Festivals and Yuletide Seasons.
Chrysanthemum is one of the most important and marketable cut flowers in the world. However, a relatively limited vase life reduces its marketability (Mashhadian et al 2012). Hence, large amount of money can be saved from foreign exchange by stepping up the production of the cut flowers within the country. One of the solutions in increasing the chrysanthemum’s marketability is to extend its vase life although this cut flower has a vase life of 7 to 14 days only. Several chemical treatments were used by flower growers to extend the vase life of some cut flowers to maintain the freshness of the flowers so that it can be exported to other country. One is applying with 1- Methylcyclopropane, but it was expensive. Analysis showed that Coconut water contains cytokinins that have been discovered to have properties such as exhibiting growth regulation, development and aging.
With this idea, the study

For each treatment, we obtained two planting trays with cell flats- in which one corner cell was cut out to water the plants. We filled all cell flats with the fertilized soil and used forceps to place one seed with 3-4mm deep in the middle of each cell. After all trays of cells were planted, we brought these trays in a growth room and watered the plants. In the growth room, the amount of light, the temperature, and the humidity was kept the same for both control and experiment treatments. By using a ruler, we poured water into the trays up to 3 cm through the open-corner cells. We then watered the plants up to 1cm every Monday and Wednesday and up to 3cm every Friday. We also made a log of water that recorded who watered, how much water, and observations of the…

We knew that water is normally stated as the best form of liquid to make sure plants grow as best as they can, but we wanted to know if causing the water to be more basic or more acidic would affect how the plant grew. Our hypothesis was that if the plant is treated with a pH of 12 then treated with another pH.…

Like any other son or daughter, one may think that flowers are used as a token of appreciation on a day where all mothers around the world are celebrated for all of their efforts to raise us. Yet, the question of where and how the flowers are harvested and issued to consumers never comes up. Many serious labor and environmental problems have been associated with the floriculture especially south of the border in the Latin American countries where most of our flowers derive from through a tariff-free ship to the United States. Health hazards are the bare minimum that is suffered by this floriculture society as a result of the pesticide/fertilizer runoff into fragile water resources in the community and the chemicals that are used to preserve the flowers are exposed to the women who work with them on a daily basis. As a result, social change for the floriculture is…

John Steinbeck’s 1937 story “The Chrysanthemums” depicts women as typical housewives back in the 1930’s only being allowed to cook, clean and mother. Elisa, who is the protagonist and the dynamic character in this story, is the typical women for this time period but rather than mothering, Elisa uses her need for power and strength in gardening. Gardening isn’t necessarily Elisa’s passion although in the story she claims she has “planter’s hands” and a “green thumb” for planting anything in rich soil, I feel as though it is an act. An act only because Elisa almost seems to make herself plant chrysanthemums because yes, she is good at it but if she didn’t plant the flowers then relatively speaking she would have nothing else to occupy herself with. Elisa expresses herself through her chrysanthemums. I feel Elisa expresses herself this way because the chrysanthemums she grows are big, beautiful and noticeable something she deep down inside is but just not in the eyes of her husband or any other man. For they see past what really matters and stick to the stereotypical women of the 1930s.…

Flowers absorb liquid through their roots, which are attached to xylem vessels. Xylem vessels are tubes that can expand through several feet of tissue and be .7mm in diameter. Their walls are thickened with cellulose deposits. Xylem bring water up to the leaves and petals of the plant. Even without contact with the roots, the xylem can still absorb water. Because of this, a cut flower usually doesn’t die for a couple days (as long as it is placed in water of course).…

Fresh flowers are purchased for a variety of reasons. The majority of purchases have traditionally been for special days such as Valentine 's Day, Mother 's Day and birthdays. Whatever the reason for buying fresh flowers, the consumer considers a number of variables before making a choice. The most important of these variables are price, the freshness and quality of the flowers, and in the case of Calyx & Corolla, the delivery period. Achieving the best balance of these variables is key to being successful in our business. To understand where the best balance lies, we must look closely at the preferences and actions of our consumers.…

A typical flower is composed of modified leaves arranged in four whorls (circles) on the end of an enlarged portion of the stem called the receptacle. The calyx is the outer (and lowest) whorl of floral parts and often functions to enclose and protect the flower bud before it opens. Individual members of the calyx, usually green, are called sepals. Moving inward, the second whorl of floral parts is the corolla. Individual members of the corolla are called petals, which are often conspicuously colored to attract insects or birds that serve as pollinators. Plants that are wind-pollinated or that self-pollinated do not have colorful petals, such as the model plant Arabidopsis.…
