Girls on the Run is a not for profit organization with the mission of educating and preparing girls for a life-time of self-respect and healthy living. Girls on the Run celebrates each girl’s uniqueness and strives to teach young girls to appreciate the differences in others. I have worked with over 100 girls.

My goal is to help girls understand the power of their potential by setting a goal and working hard to achieve it. During the 10-week program, girls participate in various running activities that teach lifelong skills like compassion,

During the school year, the children living there would have access to free or reduced lunch in their schools. However, due to budget cuts and the onset of summer, this lunch was no longer available to them. M I helped pack over two hundred bagged lunches each morning, and then traveled to various facilities to deliver the food. These meals were relatively simple, with a menu usually featuring ham sandwiches, bags of chips, juice boxes and cookies enclosed within brown paper bags. Yet, the grins of excitement on the children’s faces and murmured thanks from relieved mothers proved that my “simple” gesture had proved to be heartwarmingly complex. After distributing the lunches, the team of volunteers and I would linger and play games with the children there. A quick, fifteen minute round of kickball could easily escalate into an exciting hour-long tournament.

I have also volunteered at homeless shelters, shelters for foster children, and food

This openness allows the girls to say what’s on their mind about things that rarely get talked about. We think that our program could use a time each week to allow the participants to talk freely about what they have learned and get advice from the instructors, as well as their peers. Another component of the program that we will be considering for our program will be the use of professional educators. Reel et al. (2010) had “staff including two Health Promotion and Education graduate students and two professionals (a Ph.D. and Licensed Clinical Service Worker) who attended the weekly sessions”(pg. 110). This lets the parents know that well-educated individuals are administering the program. We considered holding our program during school and using teachers to be in charge of teaching the students. Instead, we thought it best to allow people who know the information best to educate the…

The program is provided as an after or before school group in schools and community setting throughout Northern Colorado. I was babysitting with three other high schoolers and I was told that there are normally more kids that attend but the night that I was helping there was only four kids. There was a dinner before and they had spaghetti and cookies along with milk or juice. It smelt really good but I had practice before so I was not able to attend the dinner. I did end up getting a cookie and that was really good. After the dinner when the meeting started we were able to go into a teachers room and play with the toys or stay in the gym and shoot hoops or run around. The little girls decided they wanted to go into the room and I was more than happy to go in there and play games. Girls are normally more my thing. Nathan came with and helped, we played hangman on the board and “house” that didn't last very long. One of the girls wanted to play “teacher” so she gave me and Nathan a spelling test and by that time it was time to go. I had a lot of fun playing with the little girls. I took one-two hours out of my night to help the parents of the kids so they could focus on the meeting and not worry about what their kids were doing in another room. When I was little my mom was in PTO and I still remember when high schoolers came to help and I hope they remember when they are my age. Knowing that I was making a difference made me want to realize the importance of helping the…
