Clinical Reflection Paper
For this clinical I spent time at an outpatient surgery center. I got to observe many medical procedures, assist with patient admission and discharge, and learn how to complete preoperative and postoperative assessment. In addition, I had many opportunities to observe how nurses work as a team, so I was able to gain insight on how to deal with stressful situations appropriately.
The staff at this clinical was very kind and passionate about what they do. They gave me lots of advice regarding nursing school and working in the medical field. Many nurses emphasized that I begin working in the Intensive Care Unit because it offers great practice and knowledge that can be applied anywhere in nursing.
Having day-surg as my second clinical site

Mr. and Mrs. Lawson brought their 4-year-old adopted daughter, Clara, to see Dr. Mason, a psychiatrist. Clara was polite in greeting Dr. Mason, but did not smile and kept her gaze down as she took a seat. Mr. and Mrs. Lawson sat next to Clara and began explaining their concerns. They described Clara as a quiet child who has recently begun throwing temper tantrums, during which she is inconsolable. Her sleep and eating patterns have changed, and she no longer wants to go to preschool.…

During the next session, Kasten should continue to work on articulation of /s/ sounds with ES, focusing on phonetic placement, and making E.S more comfortable with correct speech sounds. Kasten appeared to be a good clinician. However, at times I think she was a little too picky in her assessment of E.S’s pronunciations. Being that this was such a long session for an eight year old, in future sessions I suggest more breaks during transitions. Lastly, I recommend more competition based games between Kasten and E.S; it will be a great way to get E.S to work hard, and strive to do her best during…

During the first day of my clinical, I had the opportunity to shadow my preceptor because of some technical problem I did not have my login, so I couldn’t have access to the patient records and all the information’s I needed. Consequently, I shadowed my preceptor. In fact, it was a learning since I did observe how she does her charting, reporting, how to start, organize and prioritizes during a shift. The culminant point of the day was the admission of a patient from the PACU. Before the patient came to our unit, there was a great communication between the nurses who took care of the patient before his admission to our unit. The patient had a surgery on his neck and he looked fine at first glance. We assessed him and followed all the protocol…

In this candidate’s facility, shift report is being done away from the patient bedside, usually at the nurses’ station, in a doctor’s charting room or outside of the patient’s room in the hallway. When a patient is admitted to Women’s Services at this candidate’s hospital, a flier is placed in the admission folder with the title “Our Promise to our Patients…” The first two bullet points outline our promise to include the patient and their family in all aspects of their care plan. One of those aspects is including the patient and their family—if the patient wishes to include their family—in a bedside report.…

This was an invaluable experience as I was able to develop and enhance new skills. For example I was given the role of a leader to ensure that students were using the correct method on the mannequin. When we were given the task to stitch up the cut, I guided them; making sure that they all had clean hands and cleaned the injured area with antiseptic wipes before stitching. I was also able to enhance team-working skills as it was vital during this time. My communication skills also developed as I had to explain the methods clearly. This was a rewarding opportunity and gave me an insight into the work of a…

For nearly three years, I have worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the Medical Intermediate care unit, located at Wheaton Franciscan All-Saints Ascension. I began my work as a CNA at sixteen, during my junior year of high school, and have continued to work at Wheaton ever since. The interview process for my position was exceptionally competitive, hiring only three out of fifty applicants. The unit that I work on serves a broad spectrum of patients: from intensive care, psyche, detox, and post-op, to hospice care and rehabilitation. From a young age, I have excelled as a healthcare professional, and working as a CNA, I can definitely say my experience has been life changing.…

I felt I had a grip on my time management. I was able to document right after my assessment with all my patients. I find that this not only helped me remember every detail of my assessment but it also allowed me to go back to the patient at that moment, if I missed a part of my assessment, and finish the documentation. My nurse this week taught me things that I had not learned in the previous semesters. I felt sure of my nursing skills and was thinking “like a nurse”.…
