The study begins by speaking about the earth’s agricultural carbon sink capacity; which is roughly sixty five percent of the notable carbon loss of forty to eighty gigatons of carbon. The study continues to explain the concept of soil carbon sequestration; which is basically the transfer of atmospheric CO2 into long-lived pools and storing it securely so that it is not immediately reemitted. The rate of soil carbon sequestration, however, depends on various factors- such as soil texture and structure, rainfall, temperature, farming systems, and soil management. Scientists have spent an incessant amount of time trying to determine strategies in order to create an influx in the soil carbon pools. Certain strategies that have been able to come up with are- soil restoration in order for the soil’s texture, structure and management to be up to par, woodland regeneration, no till farming or direct drilling, nutrient management, improved grazing, water conservation and harvesting, efficient irrigation, agroforestry practices such as forest farming and windbreaks, and lastly growing energy crops on spare lands. In comparison to the forty to eighty gigatons of carbon loss, a small one ton of increase in soil carbon pool has the potential to enhance food security and ultimately even reduce fossil fuels emissions by 0.4 to 1.2 gigatons a year, in other words by five to fifteen percent of the global fossil fuel emissions. ............................................................................................................................................

    The term ‘Anthropocene’ is used to define the time period in which humans were affecting the earth’s atmosphere. Crutzen and Stoermer (2000) used this term to define the industrial era in which humans were affecting the greenhouse gas concentrations, however Ruddiman (2003) argues that the Anthropocene started thousands of years ago with early agricultural processes and plagues (Ruddiman 2003). Before industrialization there has been evidence to prove that humans had some impact on the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases as there were anomalous values in the concentration levels that didn’t follow the pattern of expected by ‘natural‘ behaviour suggesting that early human activities may have been responsible (Ruddiman 2003). This is as a result of anthropogenic agricultural practices as they involve deforestation and trees and much of the biomass cleared for farming were carbon stores and made up 25% of the world’s carbon stores (Ruddiman 2003) and many of these trees were burnt causing the release of CO2.     The carbon cycle starts with the reservoir of the carbon dioxide in the air, the carbon atoms move from carbon dioxide through photosynthesis into atoms of organic molecules that form the plants body. These carbon atoms are then further metabolized and are eaten and turned into tissue that all organisms in the ecosystem use. Half of the atoms are respired by the plants and animals and half are deposited back into the soil in the form of dead animal and plant matter, which are eaten by decomposers and transformed back into carbon dioxide. Humans impact this cycle because we are removing so much of the photosynthetic efforts of the plants in order to support our enterprises, we are “diverting 40% of the photosynthetic productivity of land plants to support human enterprises,” (pg 67). Two examples of our harmful tendencies are burning fossil fuels which has increased atmospheric carbon dioxide “35% over preindustrial levels,” (pg. 67) and logging. These both are being used naturally by the ecosystem and the lack of these resources causes stress and strain to keep the balance.     When talking about climate change, footprint is a metaphor for the total impact that something has and carbon is shorthand for all the different greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming (1). The term carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for things like electricity, heating and transportation. A carbon footprint is made up of the sum of two parts, the primary footprint and the secondary footprint. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the burning of fossil fuels. These fossil fuels are coal, oil and natural gas, they are all non-renewable and currently running out. Some estimates suggest that if we continue to use them at the rate we are currently doing there could be approximately just 45 years’ worth of oil, 70 years’ worth of gas and 250 years’ worth of coal left in the ground (2). Another gas which is contributing to global warming is methane, this is derived from the bacterial breakdown of organic matter in swamps and in cattle, and it is currently increasing at a rate of approximately 1% per year (3). This is why we are being encouraged to start reducing our carbon emissions sooner rather than later. Although fossil fuels are incredibly useful they do present some major problems, the burning of the fuels produces carbon dioxide. As well as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and the burning of vegetation has contributed to an increase in the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.     There are a couple of solutions I believe one being no-till farming, a practice that involves leaving unharvested crop stalks and other plants behind in the field. So, the carbon store inside the soil doesn’t get stirred up into the atmosphere, the fewer disturbances with the soil the more the soil holds on to the carbon. It’s essentially a win-win situation for farmers and the environment; it improves the soil and less fuel is used by other farming equipment like tractors to harvest the stalks.
