Choosing environmentally friendly cleaning products — and removing toxic ones — goes a long way towards ensuring a home with fresh, clean air. Clean air renews and rejuvenates; it doesn’t pollute our lives or the environment. Living in a less toxic home, removed from neurotoxic chemicals, improves sleep and concentration, makes babies less fussy, and gives a sense of well-being. Your household’s toxic burden on the environment will be significantly reduced by following these steps, and this too can bring peace of mind.
1. LOOK UNDER YOUR KITCHEN SINK: Remove toxic products
WHY: Almost everyone in the world has a cupboard full of poisons under their kitchen sink. Wasp spray, oven cleaner, waxes and polishes—the place is full of chemicals that display the words poison, danger, warning, or caution. Small amounts of the poisons drift from, and leak out of bottles and spray bottles, which then waft around the kitchen. Household poisonings are one of the highest threats to the health of children.
HOW: Place products with signal words in a locked cupboard in storage for your community’s next Household Hazardous Pickup Day (see next tip); replace all hazardous products with safer versions in the future.
HIGHLIGHTS: No chemicals wafting into your household; safer environment for kids.
2. ABOUT HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE PICKUPS: Take toxic products
WHY: Hazardous materials shouldn’t be poured down the drain or thrown away in the trash as they can cause serious

In mice and rats, ingesting high doses of DEHP interferes with the development of the male reproductive system and is linked to liver cancer. When the investigators ranked the chemicals according to how much preschool-aged children were likely to ingest, the flame retardant tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) came out on top. TCEP has been linked to cancer and brain damage in mice, but like many of these household chemicals we don't know whether it might be dangerous to…

Each person can help conserve energy by walking, riding a bike or carpooling instead of individually driving to help control the pollution to our environment. We can recycle paper, plastic and glass. By doing this we are helping protect some of the trees that are being cut down to make paper. Plastic can be used to make other things and conserve some of the oil that is used to make them. Glass containers can be reused or recycled to make more glass containers. We also reduce consumption of energy resource by turning of lights, fans or televisions when they are not in use. By doing this we will also save money on our individual energy bills.…

These chemicals are a result of phosphate in detergent and is highly recommended to purchase organic, phosphate- and APE-free cleaning products. Furthermore, while some of the most dangerous wastes are flammable, sensitive, destructive or toxic in America are “regulated under Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Congress developed an exclusion for household waste. Under this exclusion, found in Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 261.4, wastes generated by normal household activities (e.g., routine house and yard maintenance) are excluded from the definition of hazardous waste” ("Hazardous Waste," n.d.). Particularly, wastes under the household hazardous waste prohibition must fulfill two conditions: “the waste must be generated by individuals on the premise of a temporary or permanent residence, and the waste stream must be composed primarily of materials found in wastes generated by consumers in their homes” ("Hazardous Waste," n.d.). These acts are set in place in order to reduce contamination of the water and to overall educate the public of the damage…

Hazardous wastes are poisonous byproducts of manufacturing, farming, city septic systems, construction, automotive shops, laboratories, hospitals, and other industries such as Military installations and military training areas. The waste may be liquid, solid, or sludge and contain chemicals, heavy metals, radiation, dangerous pathogens, or other toxins. Even households generate hazardous waste from items such as batteries, used computer equipment, and leftover paints or pesticides. The waste can harm humans, animals, and plants if they encounter these toxins buried in the ground, in stream runoff, in groundwater that supplies drinking water, or in floodwaters. Some toxins, such as mercury, persist in the environment and accumulate. Humans or animals often absorb them when they eat fish. A common hazardous waste facility is one that stores the waste in sealed containers in the ground. Less toxic waste that is unlikely to migrate, like soil with lead, is sometimes allowed to remain in place under the ground and then be sealed with a cap of hard clay. Communities may eventually decide to use these sites for golf courses or parks, or to label them “Brownfield’s” sites, suitable for commercial or industrial uses. Even when used properly, many chemicals can still harm human health and the environment. When these hazardous substances are thrown away, they become hazardous waste. Some hazardous wastes come from our homes: our garbage can include such hazardous wastes as old batteries, bug spray cans, and paint thinner. Regardless of the source, unless we dispose of hazardous waste properly, it can create health risks for people and damage the environment.…

Nowadays, people are captivated by cheap and strong cleaning products, which contains hazardous chemicals and may potentially lead to cancer or other serious health problems. Especially, for the families with children, keeping standard quality cleaning products is same as keeping a poison in their houses. However, it works well and the price is reasonable, so people habitually buy non-green products without being aware of what is in it and how it affects not only human being, but also the environment. Mainstream cleaning products are simply a combination of toxicant chemicals, whereas eco-friendly cleaning products are usually made with either organic or biodegradable substances. Therefore, by using green products than non-green products can benefit not only us, but ultimately our environment in various ways. Now, let’s think about what is the definition of eco-friendly or green products. Why and how it benefits us?…

Our Environment: Why Clean Air is Important Air pollution has many different causes and affects us in many different ways. Pause a moment to make a list of all the different types of air pollution you come across in a single day and you might be surprised. From car exhausts to cigarette smoke, garden bonfires to forest fires, rotting food on landfills to fumes from factories...each is an example of air pollution. Air pollution can come in varying degrees on varying scales. A person burning a small bonfire certainly doesn’t have the same effect as a large forest fire taking out swaths of California forest, just as a car’s exhaust has a minimal impact when compared to a jet engine’s exhaust. The fact is, most of us probably take clean air for granted, for better or worse. Breathing in oxygen is so natural to us that we rarely even stop to realize that we’re doing it, and thus, we rarely, if ever take into account the damage that is being done to the quality of our air. Of all the essential nutrients needed by the human, oxygen is the one we must have on a moment-to-moment basis. We can’t live without it even for a few minutes. Since our bodies need oxygen to live, it is natural that the quality and quantity of oxygen should largely affect our health. Because oxygen is so vital to our health and well-being, it is essential that we try to make sure that we are doing everything we can to make the air we breathe as clean as possible. Air that is polluted not only is hazardous to us, but it is hazardous to all animals. Having clean air requires that we all work together to make a difference.…
