The book starts off with Clay Jenson sending a package to a girl named Jenny. We soon find out that the package contains the suicide note of Hannah Baker, a girl that Clay had a crush on before she killed herself. But her note is recorded on tapes.
Inside the package is filled with 7 cassettes containing 13 stories and a map so the listeners can follow along physically. On the first tape, Hannah states that anyone that has listened to those tapes, are a reason for her death and explains why. After they finish listing, they must send the package to the person next on the list. She said that someone doesn’t send the tapes, a copy of them would be made public. The thirteen reasons why startup with (1) Justin Foley, Hannah’s first kiss and started rumors that they did more than just kiss. (2) Alex Standall, made Hannah and Jessica Davis turn backs on each other by voting for “Best Butt In Freshman Class” (3) Jessica Davis. She was mad at Hannah because of the votes and hit her

He then tells Clay the he had the second copy of the tapes. Clay had many questions after he had told him that. Tony refused to answer any questions until Clay had listened to the next tape. (9) Clay Jensen. Hannah assured him that he was not a reason why she killed herself. She actually said that he was so kind to Hannah and he confessed his feelings to her and they kissed. (10) Justin Foley, he had been back on the tapes again. This time, Justin allowed Bryce Walker to rape Jessica while she was unconscious.
After Clay listened to that tape, Tony explained that on the day of Hannah’s death he found the tapes waiting for him when he got back from school.     In the novel, the characters experience a horrifying outcome after a car crash that was caused by Daniel, the oldest son in the Brennan family.
