Classroom Video Analysis
• Has your view of writing instruction changed? How?
My view of writing has changed after watching this informative video. I learned that teaching children to write can be a fun process beginning with allowing them to illustrate an idea or thought they have in their head and writing a simple sentence about it. After watching this video, I feel more confident about teaching future students the writing process.

• What questions were answered during the session? After watching the video, several questions I had were answered. Specifically, how to begin teaching Kindergarteners to write. Both John Sinnett and Cindy Wilson had great demonstrations of how they began the process of teaching their students to write. Also, I learned that for the most part, students should initiate what topics they are to write about. Occasional teacher chosen topics are not inappropriate but teachers should not always choose what topics their students are to write about.

After watching the video, I have several ideas that I would like to implement in my future classroom. I liked how John Sinnett sat in the circle along with his students and modeled and demonstrated what they were supposed to be doing. He explained to them that their picture was a plan for their writing. The children were able to follow his process and complete the assignment. I also enjoyed how Cindy Wilson made supportive and positive feedback to the students to create enhanced confidence. She allowed her students to describe what they saw in their classmate’s pictures which allowed all the students to support each other. The students were able to talk in small groups and rehearse what they planned to say once the entire class joined back

In “Cognition, Convention, and Certainty: What We Need to Know Writing” the author Patricia Bizzell explains what we need to know about writing. Initially, Bizzell states that that there is a “writing problem”. She says that we are just now realizing that it is actually a thinking problem where we used to take student thinking for granted. The author then explains that there are two opposing theoretical camps that see writing differently. The first camp sees writing as inner-directed which focusses on the structure of language-learning and thinking process prior to social influence.…

Chris Street wrote the article, “A Reluctant Writer’s Entry into a Community of Writers.” In Street’s introduction, he describes how he had a student named John who seemed angry, and didn’t seem to like writing. Finally, Street decided to change his ways of teaching his class. He began to let his students talk about what they cared about and what they knew, while he listened. This began to change his students writing.…

Combination of those three made her visit even more interacting. Each of the students prefers different learning style. I think our group gained more knowlade from the speech, because Renne used different ways of learning. We had in class activity with five words, the best way to learn for kinesthetic learners. Stand up video on youtube was good for visual learners. Because she covered a few ways to put some information in our heads we were able to get it better. While Mrs. Corcoran and I discussed about the lesson, we went over last minute details before Maercker Intermediate School’s spring break and the rest of my spring break. Mrs. Corcoran reassured me she will respond to her emails over break to discuss about the co-taught lesson. Mrs. Corcoran approves and enjoys the idea of having students focus on both social skills and math goals throughout this lesson. I learned collaborating with others can be quite nervous racking, but I have full confidence Mrs. Corcoran and I can teach this lesson, and work with another class.…

This was very interesting to watch. Their routine was to come in the class get settled and a student goes to the “Helping Hands” board and read off the assignment duties for the week. In regards to the rules, they knew to raise their hands to be recognized by the teacher. Should a student finish their work ahead of everyone they are to get additional work out of the remediation box. The thing that was truly amazing was they would cheer for their fellow classmates and say “good job and/or goog try”. They were very encouraging towards each other.…
