Classroom Management Interview
Jim Smith is an elementary educator employed at both Tarkington Primary and Intermediate
Schools. Jim has 18 years of experience in the classroom and has graciously agreed to sit for this interview on what it takes to become an elementary teacher.

Jim became a teacher out of a strong desire to “have a chance to impact the leaders of tomorrow.” Jim went to Texas State University where he achieved his Bachelor’s Degree in Education and later to Vandercook College for his Master’s Degree. Mr. Smith tells me that “education has always been paramount in my life and my love of education came from being the oldest of 5 children.” According to Jim, he was inspired by “watching how his younger siblings each had different learning styles.” “Every

Again, Jim was quick with his answer. “Psychology and Classroom Management are two of the first came into my mind”, Jim said. “It is always a good idea to learn why children do the things they do and how what we do impacts them and your psychology classes will be of great benefit to you and to your students. Also, Classroom
Management gave me some great tips on how to run a classroom so that everyone will benefit.”
Since becoming a teacher, Jim has used his experience in the classroom to fuel his drive in the courtroom. Jim has been working for 6 years with an education law firm as the legal assistant to one of the top education lawyers, Randall Gunter. Jim says that “If you really want to see the ugly inner machinations of education, get into educational law.
He states “It’s the politics of education that is what is ugly. You know “Love the kids, hate the politics”.

In conclusion, I asked Jim what advice he would give anyone thinking of becoming an educator. His response summed up his approach to education well, “Learn all you can in college, never settle for laziness and know that every child deserves our very best,

In his beginning years, Jesness believed in giving appropriate grades. However; once he started failing students, the principal and parents took notice. He soon found himself having a meeting with both over the given grades. He argued that the children received appropriate grades due to plagiarized work and forged assignments. For the next few weeks, Jesness was watched everyday by the principal. “Every spitball, every chattering student, every bit of graffiti was noted”, he says. Every time he sent a student to the office, it was just more “evidence” that “he could not handle a classroom.” Making it impossible for him to teach, Jesness left his teaching career for one year.…

Mr. Devine: I believe that the role of a teacher in a child’s life is to help them reach their academic, social, and emotional potential. The manner in which this is done can vary significantly, and it is the teacher’s job to find out what strategies, methods, and interventions work best for each child. I believe that children learn best in positive, safe, and consistent environments, and that a teacher has been given a special role in each child’s life and should do their best to help succeed.…

This perspective is very much based on the early work of Sigmund Freud. It is believed that behaviour is made from a child’s subconscious feelings, which all come from life experiences. It is viewed as a child’s problem as an outward and visible symptom of invisible conflicts. All the conflicts may come from trauma, loss, or from a strained/troubled relationship with parents or carers. Children do not have any inner resources that help them understand their feelings completely so they may be shown in inappropriate and difficult behaviour.…

While interviewing a middle school special education teacher I learn a lot. Even though Ms. Clauss was born into a family of teachers her inspiration came from one of her former high school teachers. This excited me because that’s what inspired me. Even though her mom and dad were teachers she looked at her teacher as an inspiration outside of what she already knew. She went to chestnut hill all four years to receive her bachelors then attended Cabrini for her masters. Working with someone higher isn’t that bad according to Ms. Clauss. “I don’t mind having a boss most of the time it is very helpful. She is very respectful and honoring of our opinions and thoughts on the classroom.” This was very interesting because I really would have never thought that she would like having a boss. Now looking back on it that is very true not all bosses are out to get you. Some of them really do want to see you succeed and be better each and every day.…
