Civil Engineering (CIV) Major in Civil Engineering
Department of Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Chairperson: Fu-Pen Chiang Undergraduate Program Director: Harold Walker Undergraduate Secretary: Augusta Kuhn Office: Heavy Engineering 250C Phone: (631) 632-8315 Email: harold.walker@stonybrook.edu Fax: (631) 632-8544 Web address: http://me.eng.sunysb.edu/civil Civil Engineering (CIV) The Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering is designed to give students a solid foundation in civil engineering and sciences. It will provide students with a breadth and depth of technical knowledge in the field, preparing them to work immediately in most areas of the profession, including geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, hydraulics, structural engineering, construction management, and transportation/ traffic engineering. Students take courses in chemistry, physics, and math, in addition to a core set of engineering courses common to most engineering disciplines. Students are also introduced to computer software which expedites the design process, and they are taught how to balance engineering designs with economic constraints. Program Educational Objectives The educational objectives of the civil engineering program are to prepare our graduates to: 1. Establish a successful career in civil engineering. 2. Possess a strong fundamental, scientific and technical knowledge- base, and critical thinking skills, to serve as the foundation for lifelong learning related to the civil engineering profession, and in preparation for graduate studies. 3. Have a broad and well-integrated background in the concepts, theories, and methodologies needed to plan, design, analyze, develop, organize, and manage civil engineering projects. 4. Have expertise in the major areas of civil engineering: structural analysis, design and reliability, transportation systems engineering, and water resources and

(ASBEC) suggests that the building sector is directly responsible for around 24% of the total energy use. At present this is split fairly evenly between the residential and commercial building sectors. Reducing energy use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are both worthwhile goals as it saves money and saves the environment. Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has been presented with increasing urgency within recent years as it is driving climate change. There are many opportunities to reduce energy and emissions within the building sector.…

Thin-plate weirs are commonly used as measuring devices in flumes and channels, enabling an accurate discharge measurement with simple instruments. The calibration formulae of such devices rely upon some empirical coefficients and there is a need to obtain new accurate physical data to complement the existing evidence. In the present study, the discharge calibration of a large 901 V-notch thin plate weir was performed using an unsteady volume per time technique. The V-notch weir was initially closed by a fast-opening gate. The sudden opening induced an initial phase of the water motion dominated by the free-falling motion of a volume of fluid in the vicinity of the weir, followed by a gradually-varied phase, during which some seiche was observed in the tank. The relationship between water discharge and upstream water elevation was derived from the integral form of the continuity equation. The results yielded a dimensionless discharge coefficient Cd ¼ 0.58 close to previous experiments for 901 V-notch weirs. The findings showed that the unsteady discharge calibration of the V-notch weir yielded similar results to a more traditional calibration approach based upon steady flow experiments, allowing a rapid testing over a broad range of flow rates. & 2012 Elsevier…

Engineering is a very important part of our society, both now and in the past. It is a major that opens a wide variety of career opportunities for you after college. Engineering is what keeps our nation moving and up to date with technology. It is a very strong appealing major in college due to the amount of average income, and also it appeals to many individuals likes in a career. It has the highest paying income straight out of college, and that increase in pay usually does not stop, it just keeps increasing. Another appealing aspect of a career in engineering is the possibility to work for a foreign company, and no matter where you live in the United States, your income never decreases due to the other local income. It is a rewarding career, both financially and mentally. This is one of those careers that you feel a great deal of self-worth after completing an assignment, or creating something new and improved to keep up with technology. It is a major that requires more time and effort than most other majors. You need to apply yourself or you will just fall behind and most likely just drop the major all together. Whether you choose general engineering or a more difficult division such as mechanical or aerospace, your major is the most difficult one you can choose. I recently interviewed Jack Byrd, an engineering professor at West Virginia University, on Mechanical Engineering. The interview detailed the importance of engineering and the process he went through to be where he is today. This interview would be an insight to anyone who has the slightest interest in engineering or becoming an engineer and what it takes to become a successful engineer.…

Civil engineering is not too hard because you have different position, different branches. When you start going to school, to take 2 or 3 classes for each branch, and when you graduate, you can tell which one you enjoy the most, but basically with that degree, you can do so many things. Engineering is very practical, and it’s different every day. At the beginning, you will learn, but after that, it’s all about solving problems. Every day, you do something different, like different problems, different places. You use your education, experiences to be able to solve the problems which make it more fun if you’re the kind of person that like to solve problems. There are several positions, you can choose to sit in front of the computer the whole day or to solve different problems and involve with clients. Aj’s department is small, just him, his manager, drilling crew. What his department does is testing the soil and make sure it’s good before they start to build the building. They will do drilling process out in the field and bring samples to the lab to do lab tests. What he does is manage the drilling activities and the lab testing. When he got his bachelor degree, at the time he was studying for his master degree, he taught lab for 2 years. Civil Engineering has different branches such as structural, water, transportation, geotechnical, environmental, and general civil. Basically, Geotechnical Engineering is dealing with soil, rock, etc… For example, before building a house, they have to check to explore the soil and make sure that they don’t have any problems, make sure the soil is good to build the house on top, and if there’s any problem, they have to find a way to solve it. They usually have to work with structural engineers, civil engineers, sometimes they have to work with bankers, developers, the ones that buy the lands. They have to deal with different people every single day, some of them are engineers, some of them are not, so they have to understand who…
