Civic Engagement Paper
I completed my civic engagement at the Northville City Council meeting held on Tuesday, February 16. These meetings are held bi-monthly to discuss current issues and put into action certain bills and proposals to make the city of Northville a better place. They are led by Mayor Ken Roth with his team of members of James Allen, Nancy Darga, Sam Ekong, and Marilyn Price. At the meeting attended, the council members discussed the problems with the summer fun run, Kona Run and a draining pipe causing erosion on with the apartment complex on 8 Mile and Taft Road. The Kona Fun is a fun run held at the beginning of summer in downtown Northville. This event is being proposed, but the members of the council were debating on whether it should be an event again. They have received many reports of Northville city citizens who could not leave their house due to the race. …show more content…
It was blatantly obvious these city council meetings are not very well attended. I think that the presence that my friends and I had at the event was very rewarding to the council. It showed that there are students in our schools who actually care about the issues in our community and that it is in good hands for the future. We talked with mayor Ken Roth before and after the meeting. He was very gracious our presence at the meeting. Attending this meeting really connected me with the community of Northville. I have lived and been all over the Novi/Northville area my whole life and it was very interesting to see how proposals and issues are discussed. From this experience, I learned for change to occur within a community, it starts with the citizens and followed up with the trusted council members. It may take longer than expected, but if this issue is reasonable and backed up by citizens, it can be put into action. Being engaged in our community's issues and policies is something that more people should take advantage of in our current

The Scio Township Hall was nearly silent when I entered. There were only a man and a woman sitting at a table on the one side of the meeting room. I was about to ask if I was in the right place, but before I could open my mouth, the woman greeted me and introduced herself as a member of the Land Preservation Commission (LPC). One by one, other commissioners started to trickle in, smoothly joining in on the conversation about ordinances presented at the Board meeting a few days prior. I wondered if I was supposed to just catch on. After a solid twenty minutes of casual talk, Alec Jerome, the Land chair, finally called to order. Roll call was conducted and the following commissioners were present: Archer Christian (secretary), Jim Crowfoot, Alec Jerome, David Read, and Barry Lonik (consultant to Commission), and one relatively new member. Apologies were received from Leslie Desmond and Bruce Manny. I was the only member of the public in attendance. Then the agenda was adopted and the May meeting minutes were approved.…

The bi-monthly meeting began promptly at 6:30 P.M., 30 minutes earlier than usual, as the mayor and city council members filed into their seats. Culver city constituents, local police and fire officials and three prominent figures in the disabled community attended the meeting. The reason for the early start to the meeting was the proclamation of October as Disability Awareness month and the recognition of one two individuals and one non-profit organization for their impactful work within the disabled community.…

Octoberfest met the need of giving these kids a safe place to come and trick or treat and play games. It allowed them to go to a fun and entertaining event where they could wear their costumes and get tons of candy. My team certainly had an impact on the community by participating in this event. We gave these kids a place that they could come to and have a great time, and this made an impact on the community because my group’s participation helped make the event possible. This also made an impact on the community because the parent’s saw that this was a safe place they could bring their kids year after year for a night of fun, entertainment, and candy. The community saw that this is a great event to bring their kids to. This experience has affected the way I think about the community, its problems, and solutions to those problems by making me see that there are things and problems that exist in our community and no matter how big or how small I can make a difference. If I value my time, the outcome could be astronomical, every ripple has an…

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo came up with an idea to build a non-Indian casino in Niagara Falls, but the city isn’t ready for any new changes yet. Community leaders stated that they would allow more gambling halls to interest tourists as they visit Niagara Falls. Cuomo thinks that if the community allows the new casino it’ll be competition for Seneca Niagara Casino and the Seneca’s will own up to what they owe to the state. To have a non-Indian casino is serves to objectives, said Mayor Paul A. Dyster. “It creates additional leverage to resolve the dispute with the Seneca’s, and at the same time, it provides an option if the dispute isn’t resolved.” Many people said privately that the situation is simply a win-win for Cuomo and the state. They want to focus on the disputes with the Seneca’s before anything major happens or any major changes are being made. The goal is so the state can get paid but at the same time the Seneca’s refuse to pay all the funds they owe to the state, but it is important to move on and not cause any problems. Many agree that the governor’s plan will ultimately help the city but with cause racial issues among the people.…

Prompt #1 (324 words): Jennifer Tilton in chapter 2 talks about a shift to a “voluntary state.” She goes on to explain that it was caused by a loss in public benefits in Oakland. The state of California had to reduced this budget to compensate for losses elsewhere. The loss in public benefits means nearly no funding for recreation parks and activity centers. This caused parents and concerned citizens to take action themselves. Tilton mainly focused on educating and keeping the children involved in extracurricular activities. With more free time after school and no extracurricular activities, people begin to think the worst. They believe that this is a recipe for kids to become uninterested in school and possibly become criminals. I personally think that the public should not have to be responsible for setting up extracurricular activities and events at local parks on their own. I will say that there are obviously some positive things that could come out of that. It would really bring a community together, everyone would build stronger relationships with their neighbor, and kids would have multiple role models to look up to among the community. Public financing should be made available to the community because honestly not a whole lot of middle class citizens and parents have unlimited amounts of time to volunteer, organize, and finance extracurricular activities and recreation events. As a community member one should want the best for their child's future and the future of all children in the community. I was glad to read about how the some neighborhoods took it upon themselves to help their children when the public funding was little to none. The NCPC wasn't just parents it was also concerned citizens and for the public to step up and take action was an amazing thing. Funding from the state of California or the city of Oakland would have tremendously helped out the volunteers that wanted a brighter future for the children of the…
