City Team Reflection

Throughout my fall semester I volunteered at City Team: San Jose. It is located off Old Bayshore High way. They have multiple missions, which are to feed the homeless and influence people’s lives in a positive way. The City Team in San Jose is a men’s shelter, a recovery program for men who have experienced addiction. This process is about 9 to 12 months, and comes with clothing, counseling, meals, a place to live in, Bible studies, career employment services, and education classes. City Team has been operating for 59 years. Near by grocery stores, such as Luckys, Whole Foods, and Trader Joes, donate plenty of food that is about to expire, yet still good to eat to City Team. City Team receives so many donations that they cannot even use all of the food in their free meals that they prepare. Not only was I inspired to help the homeless, I learned new cooking skills. For example, I never knew how to cut a chicken or chop melons. Also, every one deserves to be assisted in any way. I am thankful to experience serving my community. I learned that it is not the homeless fault for being in the position they are today. So many unfortunate outcomes could have resulted them to be homeless such as, being laid off. San Jose is a very expensive city to live in, which means it is even harder for families and individuals to live in. The homeless are hungry every day, and does not have the energy to function to apply for a job. City Team also impacts the homeless lives by providing them shelter and unlimited food not only for the day but the next couple days by giving them extra snacks. Although feeding the homeless does not solve hunger, organizations like City Team helps the homeless to be able to eat a full meal and impacts their
