The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), has endorsed the use infant male circumcision for the prevention of various medical conditions, and to endorse its reimbursement for reimbursement by third party payors (AAP 20XX). Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the group UNAIDS advocate and recommend the use of circumcision in males for the prevention of HIV (WHO, 2007). Despite the avocation by leading groups such as AAP and WHO, many western countries and groups within the WHO advocate against the use of circumcisions for medical reasons. In fact, as presented in a rebuttal to the AAP policy statement, Morten Frisch and researchers (2012) indicated circumcisions in infant males are on the decline in the majority of the industrialized

    In order to take a stance on circumcision, one must know some things about circumcisions. A circumcision is a procedure done to male patients. The doctor conducting the procedure first numbs the penis. Then the doctor grabs the prepuce (foreskin) and tears the synechia apart. The prepuce is held and a vertical slit is cut into the bottoms side of it. A device is laid over the prepuce, and the excess skin is cut off using a scalpel or surgical scissors. This procedure removes about one third of the penile skin, takes ten or so minutes to complete, and is often not felt, with the exception of the initial numbing, by the baby boy.     The format of this source was in the style of a newspaper article which had clear bold headlines, but not a large enough size to attract your attention although the headlines did highlight the purpose of the article. The font was used continuously throughout the article and kept at a similar size. The audience was mainly aimed towards the public, with an informal tone used as no jargon was used and also no terminology used in order to make it harder to understand, therefore simpler language was used, which best fit the tone used with the audience it was aimed at. With the argument of the author being about the cuts being made in the sexual health services such as Family Planning (FPA) and Brook, the argument clearly stresses the concern at the higher statistics of young people with catching Sexual Transmitted Infections and pregnancy. The Article only contained one image which promoted contraception, showing what kind of services are offered in both Brook and FPA. The language used was in a sense of concern and anxiety with words like “vulnerable” (Williams, 2012) being used, which suggests that concern is being raised. With the lack of statistics and facts used I was not as convinced as I could have been , having said that the articles use of language made it easier to understand so the language used best fit the audience intended. The argument was convincing as it did make me realize the importance of the sexual health services, but as said before, if facts and statistics were included the argument would have been enhanced into an excellent argument.…

Leto’s midwife’s bumper sticker reads, “100 percent of babies oppose circumcision” (Class Reader, Pg 117), and this is absolutely true. Less than half of infant boys that undergo this procedure receive analgesia (Our Sexuality Pg. 126). The other infant boys either are too small to receive any analgesia or their parents opt not to allow it. Complications from the surgery include bleeding, infection, cutting the foreskin too short or too long, and improper healing.
