Cinderella Rant (Catcher in the Rye style)
Hey. The name’s Cinderella. Where I want to start my story is when my Dad married this phony after Mom died. Now I’ve got two crumby step-sisters, who aren’t exactly on the pretty side, and they make me work in the goddamn kitchen. I mean for chrissake, they make me work in my own goddamn kitchen. So anyway, this guy came over and invited them to some dance. I guess he was some sort of prince or something. Well I didn’t feel like being lousy and depressed all night so I went to the dance to. It was full of jerks. I mean these guys were real snobs. This one guy was practically on top of me for God’s sake. It was that phony the Prince. So I danced with the guy, I’m not sure why, him being such a snob and all. Then it was midnight and I didn’t much feel like sticking around. On my way out my goddamn shoe fell off. I mean that’s the last thing I need right now for chrissake. Anyway the Prince came over and picked it up. I guess he was some kind of perv or something. I didn’t want to talk to him or anything, so I got out of there like a bat out of hell. The next day the perv comes to my goddamn house with my goddam shoe. He tries to put it on those dopes, my sisters. It doesn’t fit. Of course it doesn’t fit for chrissake. I mean look at those feet. They look like some sort of clown feet or something. Any idiot can tell it doesn’t fit. This Prince guy isn’t too bright. Anyway, he comes over to me a puts it on, that’s when he asked to marry me. I turned him down. I didn’t want to be rude or anything, but he was such a goddam phony. They’re all goddam phonies, the Prince, my sisters, my step-mom, all of them. I think I really kind of hate this place.

We also discussed the father dying and the step mother raising her, the issue of abuse did come in the form of Cinderella forced to clean the house, live on scraps and be treated as a servant instead of a child. In result of these I do believe Cinderella is suffering from a deep depression that began at a very young age. I do not feel she ever complete dealt with her mothers or fathers death in a way any child should. Cinderella admitted that she never talked about the deaths or mistreatment done by her step mother; she simply kept it to herself. She tried to deal by developing people pleasing skills, maybe in hopes to forget about the pain. As you would imagine Cinderella although we see her as a beautiful girl does exhibit low self esteem and this will be an issue that will take time to overcome. Before our first meeting Cinderella has married, she went to a ball (this was the first time away from home and social contact) and danced with the prince till midnight at which she decided to leave without even telling him her name. To her surprise, the prince did track her down and asked her to marry him in which she said yes. This happened during the second meeting of the two; the prince was the first man to ever pay attention to her and as result married him after 1 week of knowing him. I do believe this quick marriage is…

It’s the 19th century; I have just married Jake Luklly. He was coming back to Nebraska to tend to his parents farm. Him and my brother were childhood friends and my Papa adored him. When we were little children he used to sneak through the garden to play with my brother. His farm then was fairly close until they moved further north. Being the younger sister, I could never keep up with the boys. I continued to trip on my dress when they ran. I remember that day like it was yesterday. Mama scolded me for ripping the new dress she had just sewn up for me from scraps of her finest dress she grew out of. She saved it just for me. My brother and Jake never paid attention to me. Always left me alone to play with my dolls. Papa told me that they were…

Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, the girl who finds her prince with the help of a magical fairy god-mother, transforming her previously horrible life to a fabulous depiction of every little girls dream. Generations of children around the world have heard the story Cinderella countless times, however most people are unaware of the multiple versions of this legend. The European version of Cinderella ,“Aschenputtel” written by the Grimm Brothers consists of the female protagonist being treated as a servant, yet somehow manages to leave her cruel family behind for her Prince whom she lives happily ever after with. Another version of Cinderella is the Native American tale “The Algonquin Cinderella”, where the female protagonist is also mistreated by her family, however she is fortunate enough to “find” her own prince in her village. Although both stories present similar morals, both vary in details such as characters, settings, and use of magic.…

Different readers will always take different interpretations of a text depending on a variety of contextual factors. Political, religious and social values that dominate different eras will sculpt ones understandings of the messages portrayed in a novel. A New Historicist take on J.D Salinger’s novel, “The Catcher in the Rye” will warrant different opinions to that of a Feminist approach on the themes presented. Holden’s self alienation, reluctance to growing up, conform to societal stereotypes and his interactions with others convey underlying messages that will be interpreted through historical context and gender roles from modern 21st century perspectives.…

And it worked! She ran up into her room and I think she was crying because of us, not her father’s death. A day after the ball, a man came to our house and told us that he need us to try on a shoe, because the princes will marry whoever the shoe fits. “I think the girl who the prince liked at the ball was wearing that shoe.” My sister whispered. I tried it on and so did my sister. It did not fit, but then Cinderella came down and asked to try it on I said that was outrageous because she was home doing chores when the ball was going on. When she tried the shoe on and it fit I was flabbergasted.…

"Catcher in the Rye" written by J.D. Salinger, is a novel in which the author creates much irony in the way he presents the loss of innocence or the fall from innocence in his main character, Holden Caulfield. While Holden clearly believes in protecting the innocence of children in society, he himself cannot seem to hang onto his own innocence. Throughout the novel Holden shows his love and protection for childhood innocence, the irony that he in fact himself may be losing his own childhood innocence mainly due to the responsibilities which he has taken on, and also shows that he may be more innocent than the reader first thinks as his simplified view of a complex world is much like an innocent child would see.…

There are many versions to the famous fairy tale Cinderella. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s German version of Cinderella, “Aschenputtel,” is a household story of a young girl named Cinderella who eventually marries a prince. This specific version of Cinderella gave birth to the Walt Disney version of Cinderella that most Americans know today. However the stories are very different. The Grimm brothers’ version is much darker and gory then the classic American version. Small differences like this shed a different light on Cinderella and her journey to a “happy” ending.…

    Modern Day Cinderella

    • 1050 Words

Modern day fairy tales function in our society as hidden instructions for morals and behaviors that we teach children. One such fairy tale is Charles Perrault’s classic known as Cinderella or The Little Glass Slipper, which on the surface seems to be a magical story about a young woman who is forced to live as a servant in her own home due to her evil stepmother and stepsisters, but then is ‘rescued’ by her Prince Charming. However, the story tends to perpetuate numerous gender roles and stereotypes, and defines expectations of ‘goodness’ for women. Cinderella is more damaging than valuable to children because the tale reflects rigid cultural expectations of women's behaviors and goals, and reaffirms and reproduces male dominance and female submissiveness through the portrayal of passive, conformist and weak behavior. In effect, this problematic representation then becomes acceptable and desirable for all women.…

The night before school started I could not sleep. No matter how hard I tried I was just too excited. After lying in bed forever thinking about how cool my new school was going to be, I finally fell asleep. In the morning, my dad came in my room and started tickling me to wake me up. He said “Good morning baby girl.” I was sure to correct him right away. I was starting my BIG kid school today; I’m not a baby girl anymore. He just laughed and told me he had a surprise for me. We walked into the kitchen and he had made my favorite breakfast, Chocolate chip pancakes. I don’t think that day could have got any better. As soon as I was done eating I went and put my new dress on and almost…
