Cincinnati Bengals: Third Straight Loss
A.
The article of discussion was written following the Cincinnati Bengals third straight loss. At first glance, Joe Reedy’s (Cincinnati Bengals beat writer) description of the game and the possible repercussions it could have on the rest of the season would indicate that he is a very critical person. Obviously, it is Mr. Reedy’s job to write about the team he covers, and give the readers an informed explanation of what occurs in the games they play. However, this particular summary of their performance seems as if it came from someone who was quite frustrated. “The offense looked the worse it has been since Jay Gruden took over last year, the defense returned to the form it had over the first couple games of allowing big plays and the second half was one of the worst we might have seen in Marvin Lewis’ tenure” (Reedy, 2012, p.1). To me, that indicates a certain degree of impatience with the team he is covering, as well as a critical attitude towards their performance. Based on those qualities exhibited in Mr. Reedy’s writing, it seems safe to assume that as a person his subjective nature is one of criticalness and high expectations, and these characteristics are very evident in his writing. A team like the Cincinnati Bengals, who have a fairly extensive history of struggling, would seem to bring out the worst in a writer like Reedy. As a person who gets frustrated easily by a lack of success and ineptitude in general, Reedy’s subjective tendencies in this regard are very likely to shine through when the team he covers not only struggles, but is embarrassed. Many sport writers would take a far less aggressive approach when the team they write about has issues, in an attempt not to upset the players and coaches on that team because that could potentially make doing their job more difficult down the road. With this excerpt, it is clear that Reedy feels very free to print his real, unedited opinions which bring out his subjective nature of harshness in the

A recent cover of the September issue of The Newyorker depicts an enticing image all about scandalous football. The image details a football player running from the police and winning. When it comes to sports, a competitive mindset is key. In American football, it’s hard not to win without communication and teamwork. In the NFL playoffs of 2015, the New England Patriots beat the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 for the AFC Championship. In a game that originally portrayed the Patriots as an offensive force to be reckoned with, ended out to be a game that goes down in history. After further investigation, the NFL found 11 of the Patriots' 12 footballs in the game to be underinflated by about 2 pounds below the NFL’s requirement. Now whether the allegations are determined to be true or not, it does raise some speculation about the truth of the AFC champions. The NFL began looking into the issue because modifying the footballs could provide a competitive advantage, compromising the integrity of the game. People might accept this article, Deflategate: An Entire Scandal Based on Insecurity, in Pats Pulpit by Rich Hill as simple journalism that tells the truth, but it actually is attempting to persuade readers into thinking that cheating is tolerable if you’re good at something. Although it seems harmless and inspiring, claiming others have insecurities actually promotes a particular worldview; that maybe it is a larger liberal war on success.…

Berube analogize student’s essays and watching sports commentary on ESPN, because students tend to summarize in their essays instead of analyzing it. Berube uses an example as to what he is trying to explain that the world of sports is metacommentary and no one actually summarizes on how the game is being played. Instead they analyze, they just point out the important part of the game. In the tenth paragraph he quotes “Well, Tony let me point out that last night, the Red Sox swept the Tigers and crept to within three games of the Yankees.” And then he quotes that “…I’m just pointing out that the Sox won 3-1, on a four hitter by Schilling, while the Yanks blew another late-inning lead.” Page 304…

Michael Vick one of the most valued players in professional football who played for the Saint was involved in the involvement of illegal dog fighting which he pleaded guilty to. In the article on page two Scott Fujita states and I quote “ I have developed a love hate relationship with football.” (from pg.2) I Agree with this statement because it shows that even though he’s opposed to the fact of his son playing football he still loves it and has gained so much from the sport such as, being comfortably paid, fame, friends, a wife and two daughters. Even so he still has to look at it in a negative way because he still suffers from injuries he’s seen people get hurt and worst from injuries and yet not one person is doing…

Since it’s creation in 1869, football has become a crucial piece to American society. On a typical Friday night in any small town, the sounds of the crowd, the band, and the cheerleaders can be heard from the dimly lit streets: this is the place where a town comes together as a community and becomes one through the hopes and dreams of the players on the field. During his “mid-life crisis,” author and reporter H.G. Bissinger abandoned his life in Pennsylvania and moved to the small on the map town of Odessa, Texas. During his time in the town, Bissinger was able to reveal “America’s small town values” (Denver Post), both good and bad. As he became more familiar with the town, Bissinger was able to develop a story from his introduction to Boobie Miles. Immersing himself into the town of Odessa during the 1988 Permian High School football season, H.G. Bissinger follows the development of Boobie Miles to encompass the moral of the Friday Night Lights in order to reveal the inner workings of the town, the team, and the dream and how Boobie is the essential piece to the development of those themes.…

In ‘The Secret Joy of Baseball Curses”, curses are thoroughly evaluated by supplying evidence, repetition, and robust adjectives. Throughout the essay, the author used three examples and two quotes to provide evidence for the claims they made. The author quoted journalists and authors, both generally assumed to have great adept in the field that they write about, to further strengthen and support claims that the author made. In addition, the author used only baseball examples to explain the points; these three examples all provide logos and ethos to the essay by proving that the author is knowledgeable in the field and showing how the points being made are logically concluded. The author also repeats the phrase, “In the end, a fantastic…can…

He starts throwing punches and being aggressive with his statements. He uses authority to say that cheerleaders are not all perfect. There were professional cheerleaders that do drugs, and do whatever it takes to be skinny, even if it’s not healthy. This is a good point, but he goes about the wrong way of saying it. He uses sarcasm to back this statement and it just comes out wrong. After that he shows his true reasoning for writing the article. He comes out and says it might be a hard topic to write against. Cheerleaders are like baseball, an American tradition, but someone needed to stand out against them and be the bad guy. Women have had equal rights for a long time now and do not have to show off the guys any more. This is the point he has been trying to make throughout the whole…

I did not like the article “Let’s Think Outside The Box of Bad Clichés” by Gregory Pence. I do not agree with any of the arguments he makes. He is ineffective in the way he tries to persuade his readers to think more instead of using trite phrases. He organizes his article in a manner I find unusual and uses selective details to create an overall tone of annoyance. Often, Pence uses negatively connotative diction to show his emotions, but he has overdone it.…

Sports are an intimate part of many people’s lives. Without it, many of us would not share certain relationships or bonds with people who like it as much as we do. Football is indeed my favorite sport to watch. From the touchdown dances to seeing a favorite player break a record, football is intense, exciting, and amusing to watch. Football teams can define the character of certain regions and places (Sports and Recreation, 2004). In good old Minnesota, we “bleed purple” and love our Minnesota Vikings. Although the Vikings have never won the Super Bowl, we still love them regardless because of their hard work and dedication to the sport and to the fans. The whole organization behaves in a manner that keeps the fans coming back for more, as do other National Football League teams around the United States. The National Football League and its teams need to have spot-on organizational skills. If there is not proper organizational…
