Have you ever noticed everywhere you go, people are smoking. Smokers will stand out in zero degree weather or even spend their last dollar just to get that increased sensation that nicotine delivers. Nicotine is the common ingredient in cigarettes. It has been named the most addictive habit over heroin and ahead of alcohol and cocaine when it comes to dependence. Nicotine triggers the brain to be more efficient in processing information. Nicotine also reduces anxiety and induces euphoria. Studies also show that nicotine stimulates alertness and arousal. These effects of nicotine still do not outweigh the harmful effects of nicotine addiction. There are other ingredients in cigarettes that are very harmful that most smokers are not aware. Cigarettes contain acetylene (fuel used in welding), cyanide, nitrous oxide, and carbon monoxide which are all harmful chemical that is used for poison. Regardless of the many facts related to the dangers of smoking cigarette, smoking continues to increase throughout the world.
Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Smoking causes many diseases and reduces the overall health of individuals. Most importantly, smoking causes death. Smoking accounts for an estimated 443,000 deaths or nearly one out of five deaths each year in the United States. More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency syndrome virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries suicides and murders combined. Smoking causes an estimated 90% of all lung cancer deaths in men and 80% of all lung cancer in women. An estimated 90% of all deaths occur from chronic obstructive lung disease from smoking.
With all of these statistics we should ask ourselves “Why are there still so many people out there that continue to smoke?” Smoking starts in the teenage years. The preventive methods should focus on young adult’s ages 18 through 25. Almost no one start smoking after age 25. Nearly 9 out of 10 smokers start smoking by age 18 and 99% started by age 26. Too many young people are using tobacco. Today, more than 600,000 middle school students and 3 million high school students smoke cigarettes. At least two youth or young adults become regular smokers each day.
Tobacco use by youth and young adults causes long term damage. The most serious being nicotine addiction. Prolong tobacco use can lead to severe health consequences. Early cardiovascular damage is seen in most young smokers and most die very young. Smoking reduces lung function and retards lung growth. Youth are very sensitive to nicotine and become dependent earlier than adults. Youth are influenced by social and environmental tobacco use. There are messages and images that make tobacco use appealing to them everywhere. They smoke to fit in with their peers and see smoking as appealing. Smoking is seen in social circles, movies they watch, video games and in their communities.
Tobacco companies spend more than a million dollars an hour in this country to market their products. Tobacco products advertising and promotions influence too many young people to start using tobacco.
What are Cigarette Taxes?
On July 1, 1862, the United States passed excise taxes on many items including tobacco. This occurred as a result of the Union’s increasing debt during the American Civil War and the Federal government’s need for additional income. After the war many taxes were eliminated but the tobacco tax remained. In 1868, the government’s main source of income came from tobacco taxes. Despite the excise tax of the Federal government, the states did not implement a tobacco tax until the 20th century. In 1920 Iowa became the first state to pass a tobacco s and excise tax. Other states were quick to follow and by 1950, 40 states and Washington DC had taxes on cigarette sales.
