Sustainable development is the concept of needs and limitations imposed by technology and society on the environment's ability to meet the present and future need. The term sustainable development was brought into common use by the world commission on environment and development in its reports (WCED). According to WCED sustainable development means a process of change in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development and institutional change are all in harmony and enhance both current and future potentiality to meet human needs and aspirations. Sustainable development is a development that meets needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. For achieving sustainable development what is needed in global movement as well as significantly increased political will and public pressure in order to persuade industry, governments and institutions to take responsibility for their action. It must be borne in mind that development should not endanger the natural system that supports life on earth. With this attitude towards nature technological advances increase our ability to use earth resources and thus increase the damage. However, the realization is growing fast that we are in a world of limits and ever increasing growth of material consumption can only damage the life giving physical components of the environment. The concept of sustainable development was highly appreciated at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) at a Rio de Janero in Brazil, commonly known as Earths Summit. Sustainable development also needs understanding the basic needs of deprived people of the world. It is necessary to provide opportunities in order to satisfy their…

The dream of a sustainable future begins with actions rooted in the present. At Ayala Land, we realize that to make a difference, the crucial strides towards a sustainable tomorrow must be made today as global warming and environmental problems loom over the horizon. Now is the time to act with utmost urgency and focus for the sake of our children and future generations. In 2007, we defined the terms of sustainable land use and development, drawing from our rich heritage of environmental enhancement and impact reduction initiatives, and mindful of the specific challenges that face our environment, economy, and society. We then took a major step forward in 2008 by defining a Sustainability Framework that will ensure that the way we do business is responsive, transparent, and aligned with our promise of enhancing land and enriching lives for more people, for generations to come. This is the reason behind the theme of this year’s report. We want to communicate the necessary linkages that underpin our goal of providing a sustainable future even as we continue to fine-tune our metrics and targets that drive our various sustainability programs, projects, and activities. Apart from the partnerships we continue to make at the local and national levels with both public and private institutions, internal alignment is crucial. Only in this manner can the company commit to a comprehensive and coherent sustainability work plan and scale up the measure of our positive impact to a significant level. With the global financial crisis and the continuing effects of climate change, we realize that while we remain competitive, we must continue to raise the bar, set more aggressive goals, and deliver innovative products and services to improve our sustainability performance. As a business leader and the first real-estate company in the Philippines to approach…
