Church Observation Paper
After visiting three church services, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Methodist, and I found many similarities and differences. But first, I will discuss each church service individually. Then, I will compare those services with each other. Firstly, when I visited Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church, I did not know what to expect because I have had never visit a Church before this visit. When entering the church, I noticed that there were many people there, and they were waiting for the service to begin. Afterward, as we walked into the sanctuary, an usher provide us with a service folder. I noticed that Hymnals and Bibles are provided for us to use throughout the service found in the back of the pew directly in front of my pew. However, the service …show more content…
Upon entering the church, immediately noticed that there were families with their kids, then I noticed that they have a special place for the kids to stay. However, the service started by some songs led by a band, greeting, prayer, confession of sins, then reading a portion of God's word. After worship, they invite us to stay for a coffee. Finally, the last service I attended which I did not stay for a long time was The First Free Methodist Church. The service started with singing hymns, and we were singing with the choir, then the leader read from the gospel. However, the leader started to say two stories happened to him about how God is everywhere with us, and every situation in all of the creation at any given time, and in every manner, time and place. Looking at these three services, it is easy to find the similarities. However, I am going to start with the differences. The walls inside the church on Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church were bright white, but the other two churches were dark brown. On the other hand, all the three services have the sense of community, but each one has their own style. Also, all the three singing hymns, but in different

I attended a service at North Coast Church. This church is at 2405 North Santa Fe Avenue in Vista, California. North Coast church is an Evangelical Free church with 10000 regular attenders. The history of this community is very interesting. It started in 1976, in the house of Ron and Alice Treibel who started doing weekly Bible studies in their Carlsbad home. Their home became too small for the increasing number of people who wanted to attend, so they started Sunday services. They rented the Carlsbad Women’s club and a few years later they rented the Carlsbad High School Cafeteria. By 1990, their congregation had nearly 800 regular attenders. After many sacrifices, they bought a building in Vista on North Melrose Street that provided future growth. In 2010, they moved to their current location in Vista. They offer a combination of live and video venue worship services to their 10,000 attendees. They offer services at three local campuses in Vista, Carlsbad, and Fallbrook with locations as far away as Hawaii and Okinawa.…

Chances are if you grew up in the south, then you most likely have been to a church service before. I remember as a kid getting the wakeup call every Sunday morning from my mom, “Get up and get dressed for church!” Even if I did not feel like going, she would drag me out of bed and make me go. Anne Lamott writes about the same thing in her essay “Why I Make Sam Go to Church.” Lamott wrote “Why I Make Sam Go to Church” in 1999 as part of a collection of autobiographical essays in a book called Traveling Mercies. My main reaction to this work was a positive one. I thought the essay was eye opening in a sense and it shows that everyone needs guidance and help from others sometimes.…

On February 28, 2010, I went on a fieldtrip to a Methodist church called Muir’s Chapel United Methodist Church (UMC). The church was founded in 1822 when Jeremiah Dodson, a local preacher from the west, held services under brush arbors and the shade of oak trees on the grounds. The church grounds were located behind where the current building is located at 314 Muir's Chapel Road Greensboro, NC 27410. After his services and charge began, the charge was organized and passed on to the Reverend Thacker Muir. Reverend Muir cut the first log for the first structure known as the “Log Meeting House.” In Reverend Muir’s honor the name was changed to Muir’s Chapel.…

For my field trip to another religion’s worship service, I chose to visit the Beth El Congregation Synagogue in Baltimore, Maryland. I have family members that are a part of the Jewish community, but I had never attended service with them until this experience. The Bel El Congregation is a progressive synagogue that is affiliated with United Synagogue. I arrived early to see if I could find someone to show me around so I felt more acquainted with the happenings around me. Lucky for me, there was a kind woman who acted as the synagogue’s receptionist for this particular Friday. She was nice enough to to give me a short tour as well as a little information on synagogues before the service started.…

The service started by a hymn to praise the God of Abraham, followed by other prayers and songs. During the prayers and songs we had to stand up and sat only when the reverend told us to. A lady came up to the stand and read the story of Moses from the book of Exodus. At the end, a prayer was said. After, someone came up to the stand and lead a a sort of prayer, where they said a phrase and the…

Holy Apostles is an Orthodox Christian Church in Bowling Green. On Wednesday, November 9, they had an open worship service for the students and faculty of --- at the Chapel on campus. For the event, Bishop Thomas from Charleston came to worship with us and hold a question and answer session after the service. It was a very interesting experience. I grew up going to a Methodist church so this was the first time I had ever been to such a traditional type of church. I noticed a few similarities and several differences between the two types of Christianity.…

    Church Visit

I visited Bethlehem Baptist church in downtown Minneapolis; this was my first time inside a church. The church building was like a large hall with comfortable chairs set out in a carpeted area facing a raised platform with two levels. My tour guide was the deacon of the church (Byron). He explained that their Sunday worship services begin at 10.30 am and 6.30 pm and typically last just over an hour. As you enter, you should be welcomed by a steward and be given a copy of the weekly notice sheet. You can have a song book if you want one but most songs are projected onto the screen at the front of the church. If the steward realizes that this is your first visit to TBC, she (or he) should also give you a welcome leaflet called "What's on Offer”. You can sit anywhere (other than on the platform!). They don't have reserved seats and people do not have their "own seat". Sit down, try to relax and take in everything around you... he said we know visitors can feel worried about when to stand up or sit down so we try to explain what to do as we go through our services.…

The next part of the Service was more solemn as it was preparing for Holy Communion. This is where the Minister breaks the bread and gives the wine, representing the Body and Blood of Christ. I then went up to the sanctuary where I received a Blessing on my forehead from the Minister. Those that have been confirmed took the bread and wine. After the closing hymn, the Minister gave some notices and then dismissed us with the Blessing “Go in Peace to Love & Serve the Lord”. Our response, “In the name of Christ, Amen”.…
